It would be better to ask someone else who’s studied in a more academic setting (I think you’ve studied it more formally than I have anyway) but there are times when there’s more of, like, a distinction between the written form of and the various spoken forms than there is with English, right? I would hypothesize that this is because characters are less mutable than words formed from letters (so different Chinese languages might still share the written form) but I’m not a linguist so I’m not sure what the canonical answer is.

you don't think there's a lot of different between how, say, half the place names in england are versus how they're said versus how they're said in the other countries where colonists copied the names but not the modern british pronunciation?

also probably a useful comparison between "standard arabic" written forms and how arabic gets spoken.

The left leaning NDP party has taken the lead in recent polls for my provincial election because the Conservatives couldnt even wait to get elected to start being criminals.

I wish I could be happy about this but we still use FPTP for voting so the Cons could get a majority government with as little as 35% of the total votes so long as the base is spread out just right (and it is). :suicide:

solution: abolish the prime minister and replace the parliament with a giant 1950s robot brain

I have a doc and take medicine just going through an episode. I think the trigger may have been a simple weird trick I read when googling how to get more energy. The suggestion is to sleep 4 hours and add a half-hour the next day until you wake up during the night. The problem with this is I can't imagine why in the world anyone would want to be awake.

the only people that magic sleep pattern sort of thing works for are people with different kinds of sleep needs than most of the population in the first page.

eg like theres a bunch of famous people who did important things who never got more than 5 hours a night of sleep, but if most people try to do that they'll just be completely miserable and wrecked within months at the latest

i wonder what the origin of the decimal separator divide is. wikipedia just says who uses what

originally the decimal places were rare, so the important divide was between . and , for the large number separators. then when more things switched to a situation where u needed the decimals more, countries mostly just picked the one they didn't use for the separator as the decimal point.

and as to why there was differences between using , and . in the first place for the separator? seems to have been something to do with the sorts of strokes used in writing in different places, and general scribe habits, which would be standardized by various lords and whatevs

moose get bigger the further up in latitude you go too.

like the moose down in utah or colorado or new york compared to the ones up in far north canada, the north canada ones can be 3 times larger

so you get people who think they know how to handle moose from dealing with the small ones and then get completely wrecked by hubris

- ate some chips
- got very high
- listened to some tapes
- 3 hours sleep
- vague half-awake-half-asleep journey to long island by transit, starting well before sunrise, in order to mostly sit around a gas station office waiting to move some cables
- good seats on the way back
- turned out horrible burning smell from car no longer manifests and consequently mechanics did not charge anything for inspecting it, so i have the subaru again and also am not on the hook for the potentially $1000 cost of replacing serious engine parts like i was dreading
