Very good write-up! Fighting games were always something I wanted to be good at, especially once all the Marvel stuff came out, but something about the mechanics has never clicked with me. To this day I still cannot reliably pull off a Dragon Punch.

But I did absorb a lot of Capcom's Marvel stuff from when we would play MvsC at my friend's house on his Dreamcast, and from watching my friend play all the various games in the arcades over the years. It didn't feel like a real visit to the arcade if I didn't hear "berserkerbarrageberserkerbarrageberserkerbarrage" at least a few times.

One thing interesting about that Spider-Man demo is that the mini-map in the corner shows the surrounding city, so I wonder if it's going to be like AC: Syndicate or Arkham Knight where there are encounters that you can begin approaching from any angle and leave whenever you want.

Between Mr. Negative being the main villain and Miles Morales being a side character, I bet there are parts of the game where you are an evil Spider-Man, or Miles Morales Spider-Man fights an evil Spider-Man

He's the main villain? That' surprising. In hindsight it makes sense because his goons have now been the focus of both the first trailer and this recent demo but I thought they were just doing that to show off the game while keeping the others hidden.

I don't know if I could ever pull it off because I've always been a fighting game scrub but there was one thing that totally sold me on DBZF and it was the fact that just before you unleash your Kamehameha as Goku you can Instant Transmission to get right up in your opponent's face (or back it seemed). Just like he did to Cell in the actual story.

The first thing I think of for a Thor game is classic Thor and forced stealth sections. If you get trashed as Thor it's interpreted as you losing Mjolnir for too long and you revert back to Donald Blake, who has to hobble around sneakily to get back to his cane to transform back into Thor. Not even saying it's a good idea, that's just how "Thor" and "videogame" linked in my mind.

I guess the obvious idea is God of War Thunder but I'd rather play something more like Gauntlet Asgard Legends.

You could also say the same thing about the Marvel side. I think the "youngest" character there is from 1988.

Edit: I suppose Winter Soldier is arguable.

Superman isn't invincible. From a dramatic standpoint we know he won't die but that's not any different than most comic book or videogame characters. I get that it would be silly to have Superman die to a couple of regular crooks but in the Superman Returns game he is fighting supervillains who can definitely kill him.

Thing is, I support moving away from traditional health bars for many videogames, including regenerating health bars. But to give Metropolis the health bar instead isn't moving away from health bars it's just shifting them around.

But the real issue is how the devs took one thing that players like, wrecking poo poo, and one thing that players hate, escort missions, and gave players a hugely destructive character who isn't allowed to wreck poo poo and is on a game-long escort mission. Superman should save the day ultimately but the appeal of his battles is that things get destroyed. The most iconic image of Superman is him trashing a car. To penalize players for having destructive battles is bizarre to me. Moreso since as Bizarro you are forced to destroy, so it's like the devs knew what was fun (kind of, the destruction is mandatory) but decided not to build a game around that fun thing.

Honestly destroying a bunch of poo poo randomly doesn't appeal to me at all. The worst thing about taking turns with my friends in GTA was that they would never do any missions. They'd just drive around seeing how high they could get their Wanted level without dying. Some people find that fun and that's cool, but it's just aimless button mashing to me.

I don't mean aimlessly causing destruction outside of missions. In the case of Superman, I meant destruction over the course of a fight. I think you were able to throw cars because passengers would automatically get out of them but that's about as far as you could get without being punished.

Isn't that the point of playing as Superman and not The Hulk?

To leave everything in pristine condition? Not to me, no. Like maybe "destruction" in this case is a bad choice of words if people thnk it means killing everyone because that's not what I want but it's silly to me that two opponents of titanic strength should duke it out and the player's goal as implied by the game mechanics is to make sure not even a window gets broken. Property damage doesn't necessarily mean death so if "Metropolis" has a health bar there should be a clear distinction between the two. I want a game to have fights that look like the Superman fights in the comics. Obviously in a Superman fight not all the environmental damage is intentional on Superman's part but some of it is and some of it's indirect. I mean the game had a move called Earthquake and if you landed from flying really fast you would create a small crater on the ground so the game kiiinda gets what I'm talking about.

Having a big fight against someone like Doomsday and also trying to preserve as much of the city as possible is exactly what I would expect from Superman. Trying to fight while also being conscientious of the citizens or like catching a car he threw at you and placing it down instead of throwing it back. Smashing Zod through 50 buildings and then throwing a bus at him is...yeah, no, I stand by what I said. That's The Hulk.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you because I've only seen the game on Youtube and not played it myself. Do you think the system just needed less strict parameters?

I'd say it's less about the strictness of parameters and more about incentives. If I want a player to do something I should make them want to do it, not merely avoid its opposite because they'll be punished. If I want them to save citizens then it should be about giving bonuses and rewards for doing so. So that I can have big fights befitting these crazy powerful characters and I will gladly take the time to save people rather than it feeling like a chore. The response to that might be "so things will be destroyed and people will get hurt while you're fighting?" and the answer is yes, but that's already what happens in Superman Returns and in Superman fights in general. Plenty of people get hurt and things get destroyed in the game so there's this weird ambiguity where you can be cool with it but just not cool with too much of it. Just get rid of the city health system. Then you don't need a health system at all. The Mongul fight on Warworld doesn't have a health system, it uses a momentum/tug-of-war bar to determine who wins, kinda like the old wrestling games (which I've wanted superhero games to emulate for years).
