It's kind of amazing that Shrek is still this high water mark.

I don't think people really have a problem with Shrek, right? Maybe just the overexposure or sequels or Smash Mouth but the first movie is good (if your kid hasn't made you watch it a thousand times).

It's less that Shrek is a bad movie--far from it--but I'm kind of astonished there hasn't been a better "you can still be beautiful even if you don't conform to strict cultural standards" animation since then.

I can't imagine a Robotech movie possibly moving forward, mostly because the company behind the project, Harmony Gold, has only questionable ownership of the franchise.

I'd almost suspect the whole production is just a pretext to entice Tatsunoko into paying them off to cancel the project and avoid a lawsuit.

The Go Nagai shows all had extremely bombastic and ghoulish villains for the heroes to yell at. Pacific Rim doesn't have anything close to a Dr. Hell or a Count Brocken.

Having not read the book (but having heard some about it) the trailer seemed encouragingly uncomfortable.

All the scifi extravaganza and the ending shot of the guy in wide-eyed astonishment is contrasted with the fact that we're actually seeing a teenage trailer-tenant distracting himself with an Xbox.

My thoughts when the Iron Giant ('s image) was briefly on screen were, roughly in order:

1.) Wait, why is that here?
2.) Oh, right. This is the IP with all the references to earlier media in it.
3.) I liked the film The Iron Giant. I like the character the Iron Giant. The Iron Giant is good.
4.) This is all deeply hosed up.

I think the film has potential.

Is there any record of Lucas discussing or showing familiarity with the Shaw Bros. films?

There's some similarity between the galactic landscape of the Star Wars films (both OT and PT) and the "martial world" many of the Shaw films inhabit, especially the handful that do feature an evil empire.

I mean in the sense that all stories are "adventures," sure. But it's not a loving "adventure story." "The Road" is a grim adventure story. "Lord of the Flies" is the opposite of an adventure story, incredibly deliberately so. There is no growth in "Lord of the Flies," there is only decay.

It's a story about a group of ship wrecked survivors learning to adapt to life on a deserted island, it's every bit as much of an adventure story as Robinson Crusoe.

"Growth" in the sense of character growth just means change. There isn't any real distinction between growth and decay, in that sense.

"Development" is that the character is in a different place emotionally than when they started.
"Growth" is that the character, through their trials and tribulations that we have witnessed, are now better equipped to handle the world around them.

Has Ralph been changed by his experiences? Yes. Has he demonstrated that he has benefited from this experience, come out a healthier, more fully-formed individual? Absolutely not.

You're contradicting yourself here. Is growth becoming "better equipped to handle the world around them" or is it becoming "a healthier, more fully-formed individual?"

Ralph hasn't become healthier, but he has become better adapted to survive on the island, and specifically the tribalism of his peers. He's also become a more fully-formed individual.

The Robotech brand is owned by Harmony Gold, and they've been involved with numerous lawsuits over how much of Macross they actually own, as well as numerous other lawsuits involving tax fraud, embezzlement and false accounting.

I doubt they have the rights to produce anything involving the 80s anime. It'd almost certainly be something wholly original.

Assuming it's not actually a scam. Given the company's history, that's my personal guess.

Might be a problem in that it unavoidably requires child actors.

Not necessarily. Jungle Book and BatB both went heavy on the CGI, and notable Disney film Star Wars: Rogue One shows that fully CGI people (and so, children) are at least possible.

And since Peter Pan is some kind of discreetly monstrous fey-human, you even have a built in excuse for everyone looking off.
