Dreylad posted:Also there almost seemed to be a bit of a reconciliation between the two when Ames basically said that he wrote all the offensive parts of the eXile book, since he doesn't really have a career to lose. it was a hilarious lie too since the offensive parts were a blatant copy of Fear and Loathing which has always been Taibbis thing.

They got a ton of poo poo both times they had Taibbi in which is probably why Mark wasn’t on the first War Nerd Chapo episode. They seem to be much more hostile toward their reddit crowd these days so hopefully that’s not an issue any more.

On the latest Chapo they interview Admiral Joe Sestak and he basically confirms everything John has said about a naval war with Iran.

The Spanish Civil War comes up in their books about war episode, but they both seem to have a low opinion about Orwell, mostly Mark being unable to get past him naming names, so the discussion doesn't really go anywhere.

Finally got around to listening to the PR episode and I love how committed the show is to making it hard to understand what the guest is saying. Even when they get a native English speaker, the phone line is terrible or there's a storm in the background, or the connection keeps cutting. It's magical.

Helsing posted:The first 30 or 40 episodes were all like that even when it was just Mark and John. I forget exactly which episode it was but in one case I remember John was literally sitting in the public lobby of a hotel with audible music and voices in the background for the duration of the interview. Yeah that was when John was in Thailand IIRC and it was after NSFWCORP closed, but they were still calling into Paul Carr's soundboard, which had been relocated to the closet of his SF apartment.

Honestly, someone needs to make a John Dolan travel show. Just him stuck in hotel rooms around the world being a sad sack while paying too much for food delivery and having the locals try to sell him on timeshares. Every season finale he has to get to the airport before the local police find out that he made fun of their ancestors dying in a pike charge a thousand years ago in an article from 1998.

It started out awkward because as genericnick said, the guy was reading from notes and had a plan of what he wanted to say that was different than John's, but once he got into the event details it wasn't much different than any other war nerd guest, if a little too romantic about the samurai, kind of like Dan Carlin is with Greek hoplites.

Something funny I noticed is that Glenn Greenwald tweeted a few times in February about how much he was liking the TrueAnon podcast. Since then, they had Yasha on the show and announced a live show with Mark and John and Glenn deleted all his tweets mentioning the show.

Doctor Jeep posted:why is glenn feuding with the war nerd(s)? Back when Mark and Yasha were working for NSFWCORP/Pando they published a bunch of stories about Pierre Omidyar's horrible microlending programs and work with USAID in Ukraine. They also took an editorial line that Greenwald and Omidyar had "privatized" the Snowden leaks and were hiding information. Mark's also criticized Greenwald's libtertarian tendencies for a long time. All of this was fair criticism and also pretty clearly related to Taibbi working for First Look at the time.

my favorite Zumwalt thing is that there were a few engineers worried that it would capsize if there were waves, but they launched it anyway, then those guys leaked that the ship might sink in waves, so they did a bunch of simulated tests trying to prove it wouldn't then it got stuck in the Panama Canal one year and frozen in at Montreal the next

Aside from satellites, the Air Force has been putting classified payloads on the "civilian" NASA shuttles since the 80s and operating its own shuttle secretly since the 90s and openly for over a decade now, though the claim is that it's an unmanned shuttle.
