I am glad this adaptation is so good.

Also both the op and ed are already some of my favorites of the past few seasons, which is saying a lot.

I skip almost every op and ed, but both this and konosuba somehow having me watching both every episode.

This show is cute as heck.

Fafnir and Quetzalcoatl are (based on) actual dragons; are Tohru and Kanna based on any specific legends or amalgamations thereof?

Kanna is based to some degree on the Ainu god Kanna Kamui, who doesn't have a wikipedia article but is mentioned in this one as being the god of thunder and lightning, and in other places as being one of the more powerful figures in Ainu folklore.

Not sure about Tohru, though I know any connections to Thor (whose Japanese pronunciation she shares) have been specifically denied.

Is this really the case in Japan and why?

They're super expensive because they're Made in Japan, often largely hand-made, and pretty high quality pieces of equipment all around, definitely built to last all six years of elementary school. Of course you can get a JanSport bag or something that will also last that long for way cheaper, but that won't have the hard shell or emotional significance.

You can actually get them for a lot cheaper than that though, like sub 10,000 if on sale, but those are usually not made of leather.

The reason people pay for something like that is mostly keeping up with the Joneses and a general sense of tradition. If you're the only kid without one you're going to get teased probably, and they're one of those things you can put in the attic and look at once every 20 years and feel nostalgic. Also, some schools mandate them the same way they might mandate a uniform.

Still, not everyone uses them. Most if not all kids I've seen on the streets in central Tokyo do, but I used to have an acquaintance who lived in the suburbs out west, and neither their kids or their kids' friends used them, they just used plain old backpacks.

Funimation dub is now airing
After Tooru says she's attracted to Kobayashi, they changed Kobayashi's line "I'm a woman, though?" into "I'm not into women". According to the dub writer Kobayashi isn't 'into lesbianism' personally

once again subs are proven superior to dubs.

I checked the manga just to be sure if maybe they weren't like, being weird and using the line from that if it was different, but nope, Kyoani lifted it straight from the bubble.

That's really lovely.

It would have been anyway, but man.

Speaking of, there's some notes from here:

That dig into a few lines in the subs that make the """subtext""" even clearer.

Not gonna lie, I had pretty decent expectations for this show and Kyoani has still been blowing them out of the water so far.

there's a fifth volume out now, and it apparently has nearly zero of the new/bad dragon, so they'll probably be fine even without needing to make up a lot of anime original stuff (though i'd imagine if they wanted to come up with original stuff it'd be good anyway)

long story short it's basically "household", so it's kind of like "the Kobayashis' place's maid dragon". gives it a little more of a homey/family feeling

It's kind of interesting because in the shots leading up to the duck, kobayashi looks like she's off to the side, so a straight shot at elma would have bypassed her without needing to duck. Though I guess it was just a camera angles thing.

UberJew posted:

Unlike previous scenes kobayashi ducks in apparent fear and the power imbalance between a dragon and human embodied in a destructobeam creates a metaphor for say, perhaps, a gun

Not to say it couldn't be read that way, but it's worth noting that guns are not even remotely household items in Japan, so there's not really a connection between them and DV culturally like there is in a place like say the US. They may or may not have been shooting for the DV angle intentionally, but either way I doubt "gun metaphor" ever crossed their minds.

Good dubs are nice sometimes, but they're also extremely thin on the ground. The only ones I can name off the top of my head are the Evangelion Rebuilds and Haruhi dubs, and even in those cases it's kind of undercut by the original VA's being INCREDIBLY good.

Which is kind of a shame, as I'd bet it would be easier to grow the market, at least in the US, if most shows had dubs on par with the quality of the original. I doubt we ever see the budget for that on a wide scale though. Same with translation quality. :sigh:

Wouldn't 'adulteress' work better then 'cuck' for that scene?

she's not calling kobayashi a cuck (or anything) with that word, she's just saying the word for that situation of having a spouse/lover stolen (basically saying "you seduced her. with your body. it's NTR. you lecherous four-eyes!")

except the word in question comes from the name of that type of porn, which is the joke, because cool kyoushinsha is a pervert

so if your goal is to stay true to the "joke" of having her say a porn word, some variation on cuckold is probably better

i wish i could rewind to before i put any thought into this :cripes:
