I'm about to pull the trigger on signing up for the Boston chapter, any regulars have advice on how/where to get started?
Edit: after signing up online, of course. I figured that part out, heh.

Boston has general meetings once a month and at the end they almost always do a little bit for new people where everyone from the various working groups introduces themselves and mentions what group they're in. My advice is to show up to one of the general meetings and then try and get involved with one or more of the working groups that interest you. Their facebook page tends to be pretty well updated on most of their events, the next general meeting is February 24th.

Just curious, what do people ITT think of the general principle of arming the Left?

I'm in favour of it, but as is common in leftist discourse, a diversity of tactics get conflated with one idea. If antifa is about making the cost of open white supremacism untenably high, arming yourself dissuades people from thinking they can isolate and attack you without risk.

Some people take it to mean "Let's form a leftist militia and go looking for fights with right-wing militias." That ain't gonna work out. I'm in favour of communities arming themselves against white supremacy, including against the police, but it's not a first step, and not something to be fetishized the way the RGA are doing.

I understand the argument for it but I have yet to meet a single person in DSA that I would trust with a loaded firearm

You people saying you shouldn't bother with easily rolled back reforms and stay charging your revolutionary crystals sound like democrats talking about political capital

yeah they totally sound like democrats. as we know, the real path forward for socialism is to gain incremental changes by electing democrats.

Oh so those are the two choices

Anyway I was just making a funny about people who don’t want incremental changes that get rolled back the second the opposition is in power sounding like democrats, that was kinda the Obama playbook wasn’t it

I don't know what that is and I'm poor, I tell you what though I will keep using my free time and labor to organize for socialism though and then charities will be unnecessary

Here let me google that for you: https://swopusa.org/about-us/

I found out about them through Boston DSA. If you lack money, they also organize letter writing campaigns to incarcerated sex workers for free, which is also a good use of your time and labor.

Anyway, I mentioned SWOP’s letter writing campaigns - with the holidays coming up, they also help organize holiday letter writing to sex workers behind bars. It’s totally free and it’s a great thing to do at a general meeting - in Boston a couple years ago we sent like 60+ letters and cards after one meeting. It’s a really nice thing to do.

(Just don’t put anything in the letter about “after the revolution, we’ll have to find something else for you to do!”, it kinda kills the vibe)

edit: this last post came off harsh so i'll just stick with "it's good to do good things actually"
