Sounds like you should start a thread to discuss whether or not there needs to be more than one Persona 5 thread.

I think all game developers can learn a valuable lesson from this: as long as we only make mistakes that aren't easy to screencap and spread online, we'll be invincible.

She's right, and you can generalise that to everything. There's no one thing that will guarantee success if you get it exactly right, and there's no one thing that you absolutely have to get exactly right in every game or you're guaranteed to fail. Pick anything - localisation, writing, art, sound, systems, programming, UI, whatever - and there'll be multiple examples of commercially and critically-successful games that have hosed it up royally.

Ulio posted:This seems to be the case with most JRPGs and Japanese games in general. They either have a too simplistic plot or super convoluted which is mainly due to bad writing.. That's why I like how the Souls series handles it because there isn't much writing in it. You don't need a 5 minute convo with an NPC to know Anor Londo is a place way past it's glory days. Also I am not in the camp of people who think Souls series story is some masterpiece but it does some good visual storytelling which isn't common in Japan. Japanese games are all about exposition through dialogue or text which reminds me a lot of anime/manga's writing.

It's a bummer that crappy video game writing has trained everyone to assume that everything will be either explicitly spelled out immediately, or supposed to be a massive twist that completely surprises you.

RazzleDazzleHour posted:My two Haru theories are either that she was originally not meant to be a party member and they decided that they should make her one instead of Hifumi to better fit the theme into the story of helping the people whose Palaces you were exploring, or she was added at a really late stage in development after they realized they needed someone to help move the plot forward and that's why she doesn't ever show up at your school before the Summer Vacation scene. This part is pure speculation, but I suspect there might have been a whole other Palace in between 4 and 5 that got cut.

I haven't heard a specific reason for Hifumi not making it before, and since the wiki doesn't give a source for that claim I'm pretty suspicious of it. I don't think we really know, but given that she doesn't have any concept art for a Phantom Thief outfit or Persona or anything in the art book, I think it's less that she got cut as a party member and more that they just decided not to make her one, from very early on.

Here's the original source. The part about Hifumi starts at 26:10. Fight me, better Japanese speakers!!
