I wasn't in on this last year, but I'll jump in and draft for someone. I'd prefer the Caps, but I'll take scraps if the incumbent feels strongly.

The Washington Capitals are Canada's team because Tom Wilson is the archetypal Good Ontario Boy who plays with skill, class, and grit. For a while now the most common baby name in Canada has been Tomwilson.

There's a report that Oshie has reached a deal to stay on with the Caps. It's gonna be really interesting, if true, to see what the numbers come out to be. He can probably command quite a price on the market, though he had said he's happy living here and would prefer to stay here.

This hasn't been true since they cancelled season. It's WHY they cancelled an entire season.

The NBC contract only pays the NHL $200 million a year; Rogers contract pays $324 per year. That's $17 million a year per team. Gate is still huge.

These outdoor games are fine if you just ignore the hype and consider it a non-special game unless your team is playing in it. Even then, it might only be special because it sucks due to weather and lovely seating/views.

Though playing on an aircraft carrier would be fantastic. Someone talk to the head moron in charge. We could play the game underway in the Spratlys or the Strait of Hormuz or something inflammatory like that.

I don't know that there is a clearly better coaching candidate available for the Caps if they fired Trotz and I question whether any team in the Caps position should be firing a coach unless that's the case, whatever their frustrations.

I alternate between thinking Leonsis is a pretty good owner (with his passion for the team and choking a fan) and thinking he's just a few steps from Dan Snyder (conspiracy bullshit and meddling in head coaching decisions).

Wasn't Leonsis also one of the major forces behind the 2012 lockout (along with Jacobs)?

IMO, he's been a very good owner ever since he learned his big lesson with Jagr. His foibles are mostly related to his enthusiasm and passion for the team, which I can easily forgive. He might have some wacky and indefensible theories, but as long as they don't impact the team I don't really care. I mean, almost everybody as rich as him is detached from reality, but at least Ted's a nice guy. How much he's had to do with head coach choices I don't know; hopefully the Jagr thing carries over there are he has a lot of respect for what the other guys in the room have to say.

He was a big supporter of the 2004-05 lockout, but I don't remember him being vocal about the last one. It wouldn't shock me and I also don't remember him rocking the boat, either. At the very least, he's been willing to spend money ever since then, which was an issue a few times with Abe Pollin.

On the other hand Leonsis hired Oates, not McPhee, and that set the team back a few years. Trotz was also picked by Leonsis directly and there are already rumors that MacLellan has his hands tied with Trotz which is why he's neither been fired nor extended. It was really odd to hear MacLellan talk about Trotz needing to be better next season. Usually GMs either fully back their head coach or just fire them and lame duck situations don't occur very often. It feels like they are going to fire Trotz the moment they slump next season in which case why not just fire him now?

There seems to be a huge disconnect between GM and coach and I wouldn't be surprised if Leonsis hiring Trotz is part of the reason why.

I have no idea how much was Leonsis and how much was Dick Patrick in those decisions, though I guess the buck stops at the owner on this stuff anyway.

Uh, call me crazy, but the Caps are a very loving good team and, imo, should do everything they can to stay the course. Holtby sucked and they got back luck. What are they gonna do, gets some +2 luck gloves and trade away one of the best keepers alive?

It'd be dumb to do anything but try again next year.

Oh, I agree. It's nice to be in a position to critique the owner when a lot of other teams have deep concerns way down the ladder. Tweeks, imo, though it's fair to wonder about the GM and coach getting along and how stuff keeps happening with that.

Wilson has become a defensive specialist. He's overpaid but isn't bad now that he's not being asked to produce offense. The only forward the caps might protect instead of Wilson would be Beagle, who is 31.

At some point after the draft they have to get it up higher so there could still be trades, but they don't have to think about salary so much during their draft. I don't know what the date is where they have to hit the league-wide floor; maybe 1st day of the season.

GMGM has to be nice because he has no alternative to trading over the next few years. With no pool of prospects he's going to make a dozen trades over the next couple years, I'd guess. Other than waivers, he's kinda at the mercy of the other GMs until he has a few years of draft picks.

glynnenstein
Feb 18, 2014

Okay, it makes sense to me from a game theory perspective for GMGM to make relatively soft deals with teams to take bad contracts and stockpile picks. I can see tactic there. And I guess the reason he's still selecting poo poo players when there isn't any deal is because the plan is a hard tank? Okay, I think that's a bad plan, but I suppose there's an argument for it. It's something GMGM himself executed in 2003, so maybe he feels comfortable with it.

So why the gently caress take the actually good, skilled, cheap, young defenseman off the Caps?! I'm half betting he grabbed Nate Schmidt just as a gently caress you for all the poo poo he's gotten about the Forsburg trade. What a motherfucker.

I also wonder if there's bad blood between McPhee and McLellan. I have absolutely no info on that one way or the other, but it's entirely plausible to me that the dude isn't super fond of his former assistant who took his job. No reason to play nice if the relationship is already bad.

I'm not clear on how the Oilers could possibly get a cap hit less than $14 mil unless you think he's going to take his prime 27 and 28 year old years at a lower rate?
