It's gotta be Sharks - Oilers in the west. Sharks have the "almost-made-it" chip on the shoulder and the Oilers have the next-next-one.
McDavid is going to be playing all out, and that alone is worth the time to watch (before his legs give out)

He has no business being as good as he is. I know he has just as much of a chance to come crashing down next season but right now he and Sheary are playing like Sid-lite and that's something we've never seen in terms of his line composition.
For some reason we've been sticking him for years with these crash-bang meathead sorts and surprise, it's not the most effective use of his talents.

It took him a while to trust Guentzel. Kunitz spent months and months dragging Crosby down.

But yeah overall I have few complaints. There is quite simply no way that the young guys the Pens have now become the same players under Shero/Bylsma that they have under JR/Sullivan. The Pens saying gently caress it and throwing caution to the wind and bringing these kids along not only got them a cup but has them well positioned to get more. How many coaches would have Sheary/Guentzel with Crosby when they have Kessel and Hornqvist to choose from?

Hell Hornqvist is on the third line right now though I'm sure at least part of that has to do with Sullivan's obsession with rolling three strong lines.

I wonder if we dangle Hornqvist and protect Rust when the time comes, thinking about where they fall in the lineup. God it's going to suck losing any of our forward depth at this point - I wonder if we'll go the ol' bribe pick and C-level prospect route.

I love slap passes and really hilariously slow saucer passes that somehow get through anyways and lead to goals. Also bank shots. I love that Crosby and Guentzel use them so much. I also love a good elbow. I'm not a Messier fan but this is one of my favorite youtube videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEgp-URw070

There's no way they win this series if Crosby doesn't come back unless Holtby utterly collapses. Their shot was the OT last night, and it didn't work out. My hot take.

Deep within the hidden bowels of PPG Paints Arena, Lemieux is seated in the corner of a room illuminated only by a dangling, bare bulb. He nods and the grim procedure begins. The two broken bodies are reformed as one, a veritable hockey voltron. The skill, the intensity, the flow. The beast shall be unmatched. He lets out a mad cackle as he prepares to introduce the world to:
Sidtopher Crosbang.

The man, nay, the creature rises as beckoned. Steps once, twice, and then stumbles over a misplaced stick.

"Lower body injury," Sullivan sighs. "No updates at this time."

I wouldn't say gently caress fancy stats.

The thing to remember is that all of the stats aggregate to what, one team having a 60-40 or even 70-30 predicted success rate over the other? Even in those ranges, you'll see upsets. The stats are generally good predictors of what will happen, but only over large numbers of games. Seven is long enough that the good team generally wins, but the worse team still has a chance to upset.

Basically, if the Caps kept up what they are doing, I think they would win the majority of games against the Penguins.

So you're saying if the Caps' rapidly aging and increasingly demoralized roster can manage to keep up the level of play they have the last two seasons (being literally the best team in the NHL) they should eventually make it through to the Conference finals?

From the analytics conference yesterday by far the coolest advanced stats thing was from SMT, the company that introduced the glowing Fox puck. They used IR tracking during the world cup and were able to create 3D game data, which leads to stuff like which players can pick corners in game situations, which players can get open in scoring areas (whether or not their teammates get them the puck), which players are effective at blocking high-danger shots, how fast different types of shots are (and how fast different players shoot the puck in game situations), etc. It's probably 10+ years away from really being used but that stuff is incredibly cool and not just shots as a substitute for possession.

e: Also Timo Seppa had a talk about text mining scouting reports to improve drafting. It was really cool, a novel way of looking at the stats vs scouts question. http://statsportsconsulting.com/main/wp-content/uploads/TextMiningScoutingNHLDraftAnalyticsFeb2017.pdf Turns out scouts are pretty good at their jobs, it just doesn't always translate to how teams actually draft.

As can be shown by any of those articles that replace a GM with a hypothetical potato that only drafts kids by their scout rankings

Yeah they have, but it's not like Malkin-Kessel are lighting it up this series at even strength so it's probably worth the gamble. I think Guentzel will probably produce no matter where you put him.

Where does this narrative come from? Makin is 1st and Kessel is 4th in scoring right now. They're clearly doing okay together

You see that sort of thing sometimes in the regular season, but when people talk about playoff hockey being a whole different sort of game this is the stuff they mean. Most penalties get called less but I would place good money that interference calls decrease in frequency more than almost any other penalty.
