That looks like it was a screen shot form the battlefield. I think Arena doesn't show the mana cost once something is in play unless you zoom in to the details.

The store I normally plays caps at 4 rounds. 4-0 gets 14, 3-1 gets 6, everyone else gets 1. There are usually between 30-50 players.

Well the LGS I normally played at has decided to shoot itself in the foot. Things have been going great there with magic events 5 out of 7 days of the week, with multiple events on Saturday.

Someone posted a picture of a sign on the wall to a Facebook group. It showed that they are changing prize support to be much flatter by doing pack per win instead of the previous 8 packs/$32 credit for 4-0 and 5 packs for 3-1 with a participation pack for everyone. The reaction was extremely negative and one of the store owners deleted the post. Rumor mill has it that this decision was made by 1 owner and a manager and the other owner is leaving over this. So far there has been no acknowledgement of the post being deleted or prize support changing.

They were getting 20-30 on a regular basis for Friday and Saturday events but a lot of the regulars were posting about going to different stores. There are 4 or 5 stores within 20 minutes. So I have a feeling turnout is about to become garbage.

Possibly but they�ve been about doing this level for the past 3 years. The only change has been not having to spend credit the day you win it whereas a year and a half ago you had to spend it immediately.

That is the rumor and it wouldn't surprise me. The owner that is staying has anger issues and drinks constantly. In the past he has done fun things like kick everyone out of the store as soon as the last round finished by screaming at everyone to "get the gently caress out of his store" literally as soon as standings were read and yelling at people for trading instead of buying the cards from him. He has been pretty hands off for the past year or so while the other owner built things back up but I guess things are changing again.

I only play there because my friends do but the majority seem to be leaving over this so I will be too.

It isn�t. I think most people are made about the flattening of the prize support. This is the 2nd time they�ve flattened it out. It isn�t so bad for standard but modern and legacy used to be top 3 split the credit 50%, 30%, 20% (2 packs worth of credit per player in to the pot). It wasn�t unusual for first place to get $60+ in credit. Then they changed to 4-0, 3-1 format and now pack per win.

I hate playing those matches. Back in mono-black devotion days I played against a kid at his very first FNM who made his deck from the common and uncommon bulk. I turn 1 thoughtseize him and see a bunch of random cards and Urborg Panther. I try explaining to him how standard works as nice as possible, because he is like 10, with no success. I go get the judge to help him fix his deck and explain the rules. The kid started bawling his eyes out because all he heard was "judge" and thought he was in trouble. I felt like an absolute monster. He got his deck fixed and played the rest of the rounds but has never been up there since.

Modern Ad Nauseam is one of the best and most fun combo decks.

Do you like drawing cards? You�ll draw your whole library when you go off. You get to throw lands at your opponent with one of the most confusing wincons that exists. Lightning Storm is an instant that has an activated ability that both you and your opponent can use. If you don�t want to win that way you get to win with Lab Maniac. Do you like losing because your deck hates you and not because of anything your opponent does? How about being one of the most non-interactive decks where in 90% of matches you can completely ignore your opponent? The mirror match often comes down to Simian Spirit Guide beats.

People at the draft table are talking about draft strategy and you chime in with something about a cool pull you made from a pack, they dismiss you

Draft ends and someone makes small talk about what you picked instead of an Impale

Same dude offers an obvious new person advice about her deck

First opponent makes small talk

He also offers advice on lines of play and allows take-backs

After he beats her 0-2 he offers to look at her deck and help

The toilet is disgusting and there's no loo roll (OK yeah gently caress stores that do this)

Round two she gets a bit of confidence and gets annoyed that she's not getting any more advice and the game has got a bit serious

He gets beat and is a bit salty and just gets up after the match

While waiting for the next round she hears him telling his friends that she got lucky and his deck is 4-0 material

Finish the tournament 1-3 and doesn't even feel good about the one win thanks to Salty McShitlord
All of this is down the line after getting more in to the game

No one wants to trade with her folder full of standard garbage

Finally wins a tournament and Salty McShitlord puts it down to one bomb rare she picked

Never gets invited to a play group or makes actual friends

Gives up and writes a shitload of words on the internet about it

Seems like you should actually read the whole article since you are missing some of the points of her article completely. It isn�t that it happens the one tournament or at the one store. It is that it happens every time she goes to a store (including after drafting regularly for months at one store) or an event.

Speaking of miscuts, I got a deeply discounted fat pack of Kaladesh to do some sealed with my kid, and a bunch of commons/uncommons were badly miscut (like adjacent card frame miscut). Are these worth anything as oddities, or just a "lol wizard sucks at QC" thing at this point.

It depends on the card but they can be worth some money. There are some misprint/miscut groups on Facebook that could give you a good estimate or be a place to move them.

I'm curious as to why Sam Black hasn't scooped at some point during this match. He has to know after his opponent has taken the last 10 turns or so that he isn't going to get another one where he gets to do anything.

He declines, then proceeds to draw his Ugin both of the next games and knock me out......then complains loudly that it took so long for his control deck to win (he won in turn 3 of extra turns, so we almost drew anyway) so he didn't have time to get food before Top 8, then bitches to my face that I should have just conceded sooner instead of trying to force the draw to make top 8.

Knowing how lovely it feels to get knocked out of contention by a guy like that, I try not to be that guy.

I had a guy do that at a modern 1k. We could draw and both make it or whoever won would make it. I was on burn and he was playing Abzan Company (before devoted Druid) he insisted on playing �because it is 90% in his favor and he wants the higher seed.� His dumb rear end kept 1 landers + birds both games and I crushed him because who doesn�t searing blaze the bird? He had the gall to ask for a draw after game 1 but at that point due to the way he behaved and his lovely attitude I refused.

Somehow CFB taking over made Wizard's streaming great while at the same time SCG's went downhill. It sucks because I would rather watch SCG when there is a limited or standard GP but I now have to wait and watch them during the week so I can skip over all the nonsense.

I should probably get rid of some stuff I'm not using now (like LotV, Snapcaster). Even though they're in my cube, it's not like it's the end of the world if I don't have them for a year or whatever until they get cheaper/reprinted. And if they don't come down then I can just replace them with something else.

I�m in the process of selling a bunch of my decks after having the pieces for most of modern. I realized even with having so many decks available I always played the same 3-4 decks. So I�m parting everything out but those to pay for a bathroom remodel.

Lightning Storm is an instant with an activated ability that can be used by any player while it is on the stack. Super weird card though and I don�t think there are any other spells with abilities like it, at least that see play.

I don�t really play competitively anymore so getting rid of all the stuff hasn�t really had a downside.

What I'm trying out now is to ID pairs or groups of decks that share a lot of cards and swap between them, for example I have GW Company built but I can swap out a dozen cards and have Counters Company built instead. I'm doing the same sort of thing with a URx Snapcaster Control/Combo list but that's a much looser definition, I probably need to tighten that one up.

That part is hard. I�d just try and get rid of decks you didn�t like to start with. Getting rid of legacy death and taxes was easy, as was getting rid of jund, modern storm was a bit harder.

I�m trying to just keep Counters Company, Burn, and Ad Nauseam (first non burn deck I played). It gives me a bit of variety and a deck or two to loan out while letting me get rid of a bunch of pricy staples I wasn�t using anyways.

LGS had a �mega modern� event today where the entry fee was $20 instead of $5 with 100% going to store credit prize support. No round cap with a cut to top 8. I had never seen one of these before but all of the sudden like 4 stores within an hour of me are advertising �high roller� and �mega� events run at casual REL. Is this a new thing?

There were 23 people and a ridiculous amount of UR control variants (3 people on straight UR, 1 on Temur, and 2 on Grixis). I was literally the only person on burn when there are normally 2-3 in a 20 person event. It was like the world went mad.

If you're playing in that sort of event, stay vigilant. Large entry fee + top heavy prizes means the odds of your opponents angle shooting go way up. Especially if it's at casual rel, where the only way they get penalised for trying it is if the judge figures out that it's not at all accidental.

I was. There were a few things that could have been shady or mistakes but it was easy enough to call them out on it and have it fixed. One guy tried playing two lands in a turn, someone forgot to write down their fetch + shock, and one didn�t tap enough mana for k command. Only real difference is there weren�t warnings or penalties. I�m sure they weren�t actual mistakes because I�ve played against the people often enough and those things have never happened.

I can watch LSV and a one or two others stream limited all day long but I hate watching limited GP coverage. It isn�t just the personality though. I think a large part of making limited watchable is having the players go through their process and thoughts the whole time.

That said I really want to drop Sanctimony against a Burn deck sometime.

I used to play it in the burn mirror at my LGS because of 20 people there would be 6-8 burn decks. I would run 3 of those and 3 firewalkers. That card was amazing before Inspiring Vantage. It turned Boros charm in to a 2 mana 2 damage spell.

I miss those two cards. Gained 27 life off one anger and bought it back. Khans standard was glorious. Especially once they printed the typed duals. There was something special about playing JVP, Dig, Crackling Doom, and Siege Rhino in the same deck.

LGS bathrooms. Some day maybe nerds will learn to:
1. Lift up the toilet seat
2. poo poo at home. I�m fairly certain there is at one person at my LGS that just comes there to poo poo. He seriously comes in, ties up the bathroom for 20 minutes leaving it absolutely reeking, and then plays magic.
3. Get toilet paper in to the toilet and paper towel in to the trash.

And maybe LGS employees and owners will learn what the hell cleaning supplies are. I wish they would take a lesson from McDonalds. Very rarely have I seen a bad bathroom there. Instead I usually end up walking in to bathrooms where I�m afraid I�ll catch a disease. One of the stores around here is so bad that I literally do not wash my hands there instead I make sure I have Purel/alcohol for my hands because I don�t think they have every washed the bathroom. I avoid it like the plague but sometimes you just have to go.
