The worst map in the game, including mines, etc?

That's an interesting take.

Towers of Doom isn't even nearly close to the worst map in hots, this is definitely a minority opinion I'm afraid.

Speaking of bad things though, I watched nubkeks play a game on the PTR earlier. The final count when all was said and done was 14 kills to the enemy team's 2 and the enemy team never even took a single building, yet the game was still dead even in levels by the 12 minute mark and only really began to express a level disparity by the time nub's team was killing the enemy core. It was absolutely 100% a snowball stompfest and new amount of XP changes did anything to change the fact except for the fact that there wasn't any sort of level 11 vs. level 13 moment. Overall this new set of changes looks completely pointless in every way possible.

There's nothing selfish about wanting to play whatever you want in quickmatch. There is something selfish about simultaneously wanting to play whatever you want while also expecting everyone else playing the "play whatever you want" mode to pick the characters you want them to play, i.e. the "someone needs to go healer!" thing in Overwatch quickmatch where it's like, you need to be the change you want to see in the world buddy.

The problem, as has been outlined before, is that people want it both ways. They want to be able to play whatever they want while simultaneously giving them well-rounded teamcomps instead of 2 assassin + 3 specialist comps and yes, that is selfish or at least short-sighted because there's always going to be a preponderance of people who want to play DPS than those who want to play healer or tank in quickmatch. I'm personally okay with having longer queues for less lopsided teams because I've had some really, really dumb quickmatch lineups before where I legitimately might as well have just waited an extra ten minutes to queue into a game because it couldn't have been more of a waste of my time.

Yes which of the other modes could people go to if they wanted to tank or heal with a standard composition?

People don't want to play those modes though, they want to play quickmatch. They also want someone to heal and someone to tank for them so they can play Nova and "carry" the game.

Anyone who thought they could queue-lessly get a standard comp playing DPS in QP is a moron

Tanking is fun, but healing is not. That's why League and Dota supports are way more proactive.

Honestly this is sort of how I feel as well. I do think that tanking is actually a meaningfully different enough thing from just being another DPS that I think it's worth including, but I also agree with Moola that on a general design level I think that supports in the vein of Zarya, Medivh, and Abathur are better than the "stuff your hitpoints back inside you" type of support which is prevalent throughout many team-based games.

Medivh isn't even vaguely a Support. :v:

Medivh's protective shields, teleport gates, and ability to freely and safely scout for his team are quintessentially "support" abilities in my mind, not to mention most of the value of his two ults lie in temporarily giving your team a numbers advantage. That most people want to play Medivh as some sort of roundabout Master's Touch assassin doesn't really do much to change the fact that most of his value lies in doing things to protect and save his teammates or facilitating advantageous engagements for them. Medivh is the support that Jeff Kaplan wanted Symmetra to be and could never get her to that point.

The fact that over half of Medivh's kit can be used by/on his allies as well as for his own benefit simply by itself makes him more of a support than pretty much any of the assassins in the game and most of the tanks and bruisers to boot. All the high-level Medivh play I've watched features plenty of coordinated use of portals/leyline/polybomb as well as more than just occasional clutch force of wills. It's cool that Medivh can contribute in fights too, that doesn't really do much to change the fact that Medivh is unquestionably a support by any metric that matters beyond "stuffing hitpoints back into people" as well as my opinion that I think games should have more supports like Medivh and fewer in the vein of being primarily focused on hitpoint restoration.

is it safe to say that overwatch killed this game

I don't think so, not directly anyway. Overwatch being a success doesn't, or shouldn't, be something that's causing this apparently level of dysfunction elsewhere. I have no way of knowing for certain but a lot of this stuff really does seem like someone at the top of the ladder handing down directives. Who knows.

Sure are a lot of people showing up in this thread to drop nuclear-grade hot takes right now, did Blizzard announce some sort of lovely post contest or something?

From what I remember (from more of a UK perspective).

- They dumped their old CEO, who was really, really bad; (He's the guy who claimed people just played the game to admire the models) and got a guy who knew what they were doing.
- Relaunched/worked on Age of Sigmar so it's actually a sane game with good mechanics.
- Launched a new edition of 40k that's way more casual friendly.
- They really, really ramped up their community engagement (they've got a youtube channel that's just painting tutorials and hypebuilding stuff, site has a bunch of lore posts and a regular release schedule that they hype up), they talk a bunch of Facebook and so on. (This is probably the huge one)
- Moved away from resin and back to as much plastic as humanly possible.
- Frequent (for them I mean, I think it's 3 times a year) updates and FAQs (basically patches) to the core games to deal with balance issues.
- They've started focusing on their specialist line again, with Blood Bowl, Necromunda, Kill Team and Adeptus Titanicus

And among other things the new CEO actually understands how things like bundle deals and sales are supposed to work. Basically what saved Games Workshop is hiring someone who actually knows what the hell they're doing and it turns out that was a substantial improvement.

So what does this announcement mean for simpletons like me who just want to see a Blackthorne/Rock and Roll Racing character show up at some point?

You have the same odds of seeing them added to the game as you did before the announcement, namely zero.

This is a function less of MOBAs themselves and more a function of any highly competitive team-based game. MOBAs are just some of the most high profile team games on the market so they are famously toxic, but 14 year olds have been screaming racial slurs at you since team deathmatch FPS games became a thing.

I'm always kind of amused when people are like WOW OVERWATCH IS SOOOO TOXIC and I'm like "man, I remember having morons call me a human being all the time back in Unreal Tournament '99". People on the internet are loving awful.

Part of it in the case of games like LoL is that matches can run anywhere from 30+ minutes to an hour long, so there's a lot of time for people to get really pissed at each other while stuck in a virtual elevator together.

I mean HotS does have a character where you can just sort of run around and make dumb plays and still actually manage to contribute positively to your team's success if that's your thing, just play Murky.

Also think HotS 2.0 was a mistake. I spent over £50 on this before that and had taken a break when it came out. When I came back 3 months ago, I had so much stuff that I haven't spent a penny since. That and the ammo changes were IMO big mistakes. But I don't think anything would have saved the game, at most bought another year. I don't think there's room for so many MOBAs if even the big two are supposedly losing players.

I don't think the ammo changes were honestly as big a deal as they were made out to be, and the tactical depth of dropping roaches or demon warriors onto towers until they run out of shots wasn't really adding a lot of richness to the game imo. As other people have said, I think the biggest failing of 2.0 was the frankly boneheaded decision to make the starting bundles a limited time offer, assuming "make all the characters free to play from the outset" was simply a non-starter.
