Have the Tories polled below 43% in any poll yet? My bet is that there is a little bit more tightening to come in the last few days from the the polls showing the biggest lead, with an 8% lead being the actual result on the day.

Didn't Banksy get revealed by all the papers about 18 months ago? He was a normal looking white guy from Bristol called Robin, they spoke to him and he basically said "yeah I'm Banksy, who cares who I am". Did I dream that?

What's with the "BBC presenter tries to..." angle? The tweet comes off like it's celebrating Paul Mason winning an argument, but a) she was quoting what Amber Rudd as a discursive point, it didn't seem to me like she was pushing any agenda at all, and b) Paul Mason was a BBC journalist for like 10 years, he only moved to Channel 4 a few years ago.

It's weird how desensitised you get. I have been to London Bridge many times and know a lot of people that work in that area of London, I've drank in the pub that is in that shot and will currently have 50 police cars outside it. But when the news alert came through my reaction was "another one? ffs" and then just carried on with what I was doing.

There's not going to be much more coming out about this incident until the early hours of the morning, so I suppose we may as well discuss the normal stuff. "Shy voter" is synonymous with "ashamed that they're actual selfish voter", basically. They're shy because they don't want to admit that actually, they want to keep their money and not pay as much tax, someone else should really be paying instead. They don't really want to have to have their lives interrupted by strikes, they should be able to get to work on time. They're a bit afraid of all the muslims and would like to see less of them around, even though you shouldn't say that because people will think you're a racist. It's not about being cool or credible, it's about voting for something that you know is probably going to hurt people, but helps you, and they don't want to admit that they are that person deep down. No one voting for Corbyn is reluctant to admit they voted for him. So I don't think you can really have "shy Corbynites" just by nature.

They're reporting three incidents, but it appears that the London Bridge and Borough Market ones are the same? Van driving into people on the bridge, crashing near the market (100 yards down the road) and then guys with knives jumping out. There's no information on the Vauxhall incident so it may be something completely separate. There is now also chatter about Monument station, which is on the other side of the Thames from Borough Market, across the (closed) bridge.

Theresa May really, really hates Whatsapp doesn't she? You have to assume she's seen a bunch of stuff as Home Secretary that proves that yes terrorists are using it to organise attacks, but is she just clueless on the technology? All Home Secretaries are fascists because preventing attacks is a huge win for them whilst protecting civil liberties doesn't really get them anything, so the incentive to be authoritarian is too high. So the idea that these companies are encrypting their messages must really get her goat. But it's just a messaging service, I don't know if she thinks it's something more than that, the way Snapchat or Twitter were new forms of communication that didn't really exist before. You just send texts and it's a bit easier to make group chats, that's it.

OwlFancier posted:She probably hates the idea that nobody can read it, the idea of something being literally beyond the power of anyone to control is probably difficult for someone who isn't familiar with encryption to comprehend. Uninterceptable messaging is, like, the holy grail of espionage and now everyone can download it and use it.

I think I'm also in the camp of "people are counting their chickens with a re-run of the election". Corbyn turned it around massively and the Tories absolutely clown car fell apart. Both of these things happened to a much greater degree than appeared likely at the start of the campaign. But it is about perception. Look at how things can change so quickly, sometimes I think it's about nothing but perception. Corbyn is now established as the real (and quite powerful) opposition leader and his manifesto is popular and good. Labour are back in business and will be for a while. But they ran out of runway for momentum and aren't campaigning any more. If the Tories don't have another improbably poor period of basic politics then they will quite quickly re-establish the same old tropes. From a "reversion to the mean" perspective, I'm not convinced enough yet that Labour have managed to move the mean far enough that they won't see a partial swing back to the Tories.
