Are there even people who still sincerely want Gruden to coach their college team and think it's a thing that could happen? I wouldn't even hire him for a NFL coaching job at this point, not that I think he has any desire to do it.

Has anyone ever had three separate stints as head coach at the same school? I can think of a bunch with two, but not three, unless you count Alvarez's biannual bowl game coaching appearance. Becaue I think Mike Riley is gonna be available to make his uh, triumphant (?) return.

He was good at a mid major where he could recruit circles around his conference and win on pure talent but he was way over his head in the Big Ten

It's not like they're losing that much, they were already basically at rock bottom.

They need someone who is either really good/different tactically or someone in the Ferentz/Alvarez mold who can develop/scout like a motherfucker to get the most of the underrecruited talent in the area

Butch has the two best Tennessee seasons of the last decade. Like most programs at that level they've probably just one really good coach away at any given time but they've been down relative to their fanbases expectation for a long time now

You can hire a good coach without necessarily trying to chase Chip Kelly or whatever the hot name is. Iowa State and Purdue made arguably the best hires of the last two cycles.
