Adolescent me heavily disagreed re: Kirsten Dunst in Spider-Man.

A few pages ago people talked about how bad the Simpsons 90s flashback episode was, but honestly one of the more baffling choices comes from the actual era: in the Lollapalooza episode, the festival features Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill, which is spot on. But the headliner is...Peter Frampton, one of the most uncool boomer rockers ever.

(I am aware that Sonic Youth are technically baby boomers, but they're icons of Gen X music).

Kirsten Dunst is a flawless ethereal beauty and I remember being so incredibly confused during the Spider-man/Bring It On era when people were calling her ugly.

She has a bit of an unconventional look about her a la Maggie Gyllenhaal so I get why some people wouldn't be into her, but calling almost any actress ugly is absurd. You pretty much need to be in like the 95th percentile of human attractiveness to get lead work.

Reminds me of another fitting thing (maybe more for the IIMM thread): Mean Girls and Easy A, while both very funny, have to overcome the idea that Lindsay Lohan and Emma Stone wouldn't have boys falling all over themselves for them in high school. I think that they try to play up their personalities as part of it but that wouldn't really matter to 16-year-olds.

I guess Lindsay Lohan being lovable and Rachel McAdams being a psycho aged poorly.

Freaks and Geeks handles it surprisingly well when Seth Rogen finds out his girlfriend was born intersex, freaks out and eventually gets over it. That was almost 20 years ago and set closer to 40 years ago.

Tommy was a pretty boring kid. Even Chuckie had more moments. And that's not even getting into the comic strips, hoo boy.

Something weird about Rugrats in retrospect is how Angelica is the only character who can communicate effectively with both the babies and adults, as the babies can talk intelligibly among each other but seemingly not to adults. Though Dil kinda throws a wrench in that. But when a show already ABOUT babies has to have a 'cute baby' character added in later seasons, you know it's jumped the shark.

The age cutoff for speaking and understanding baby was never established and this will always bother me.

I also disagree with the seeming thread consensus that it was a bad show. I always thought it was one of the more well done Nicktoons and my parents appreciated it too. I also learned more about Judaism from it than from my family.

Not so much an aging thing as having a different audience thing.

I was watching Stan Lee's Lucky Man and the main character is a cop that punches a suspect during interrogation. In the US you probably wouldn't think twice about that scene but since the show is British they made a huge deal about it and his colleagues were warning him that the entire case could be thrown out.

They also had some kind of weird recusal thing where a cop said he couldn't investigate a case because he knows the suspect? Is that a thing in the UK? He said because they both attended the same Gambler's Anonymous meeting he can't investigate her.

I'm pretty sure punching a suspect can gently caress things up in the US too, which is why the Wire has that great scene where they tear up a mouthy suspect's mugshot and then beat him up.

If you watch the first three seasons after the Netflix season it all makes sense. George Michael punching him is really based on years of putting up with his poo poo, not just a season's worth of it. He's every bit as self centered as his siblings and parents, just with more of his wits about him.

Wow I had forgotten this show. It was so dumb it was totally addictive. I loved how the guys would act like they’d been reformed, but were such assholes that it’d always slip through. There were only a couple who genuinely seemed to change their ways.

The best part was when someone got eliminated, the host would say “Sorry, Chad. You’re just a tool.”

The second best was when the head of the charm school would “observe” their competitions and take notes but really they just digitally superimposed footage on her television.
