Pener Kropoopkin posted:The liberalizing of India's laws and the de jure eradication of the caste system has created a lot of new opportunities even for Dalits to become professionals and even bourgeois. There is obviously a lot of prejudice and poverty that remains, but the sheer weight of India's population and the scale of its lands and resources make it practically impossible for them not to make major economic gains. It couldn't do any of this if it weren't for the political unification of a supranational economic group it actually comprises. If the rest of the developing world wants to replicate the progress realized by China and India, they will have to overcome the nation-state model by forming meaningful supranational unions. India's current government and lot of its regional politicians seems more intent on exacerbating existing religious/regional/caste tensions than on the economy. You're not going to make many economic gains if the country explodes along sectarian lines Also China was very careful to maintain control and build up their own companies, infrastructure and knowledge base even while letting western capital in. India's model seems to be to just act as a source of cheap labour and being an imperial vassal, dunno what the end game is here.

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-47934513 The Chinese billionaire and co-founder of the online shopping giant Alibaba has continued to argue for a 9am to 9pm working day, and a six-day week. Jack Ma's backing for the so-called "996 system" is being hotly debated in the Chinese media. Last week, Mr Ma wrote that without the system, China's economy was "very likely to lose vitality and impetus". His stance was backed by fellow tech entrepreneur Richard Liu, the boss of ecommerce giant JD.com. On Friday, Mr Ma called the opportunity to work 996 hours a "blessing". Mr Liu said years of rapid economic growth in China had boosted the number of "slackers".

i dont know about the chinese economy continuing to grow. if they get shut out of exporting certain things to certain markets, they're going to have to resort to domestic demand which would mean wage increases. but lower wages (than western labor) is what launched their growth in the first place, so what's the way forward?

DOCTOR ZIMBARDO posted:After 2011, China began an extensive blue water naval development in two stages: first, an iterative technical design stage of increasingly advanced ships and then a numerical buildup stage once it judged it had achieved technological equivalency with American designs. the Type 055 destroyer (for example) is technologically as advanced as any of its Western equivalents, and the PLAN has already commissioned six of them, with maybe two dozen planned in total. That’s a serious blue water surface fleet. In the same time period, we built three Zumwalts to shell goatherds. isn't the us navy also in a lovely state due to getting the same corporate neoliberal overworking/undermanning/crapification treatment usually reserved for the private sector. thats what resulted in those big collisions recently iirc
