What's the best class story?

May as well answer for new players.

Usual consensus is Imperial Agent for a less traditional Star Wars story, and Sith Warrior if you want a more traditional sort - with the caveat that Sith Warrior also works very well if you play against type as a light-sider.

Most classes play to a specific character from the movies:

Sith Warrior: Darth Vader
Sith Inquisitor: Emperor Palpatine
Bounty Hunter: Boba Fett
Imperial Agent: James Bond (theoretically, Grand Moff Tarkin - the regular human who was bossing Vader around in A New Hope)

Jedi Knight: Luke Skywalker
Jedi Consular: Yoda
Trooper: Commander Shepard (well, generic storm/clone troopers)
Smuggler: Han Solo

Each class has a certain kind of story to tell in general. For your Jedi folks:

Jedi Knight is very traditional Star Wars heroic Jedi fantasy - it's very much in the mold of Luke Skywalker and Rey, you are the born hero destined to save the galaxy (even if you're kind of an rear end in a top hat about it).

Consular takes more after Yoda and Obi-Wan, it's a much more sedate story about playing a scholar, diplomat, and mystic, low-key compared to other classes. One of my personal favorites, including one of my favorite companion relationships in the game, but decidedly not for everyone.

This is me. I still follow this thread, but KOTFE killed everything I found interesting about the story and setting of TOR in favor of a super-railroady plot with lame villains and endless beige and grey corridors filled with skytroopers.

Every once in a while I think about resubbing just for the 1-50 stories, maybe up through Shadow of Revan as well, but KOTFE is just terrible.

KOTFE also feels really jarring to play it as a non-Force class, in my opinion. I wouldn't be surprised if the Force classes do overwhelmingly dominate the player base, but I first played through it on my Imperial Agent and it was really obvious that the story just plain was written for a different kind of character.

This would be my single biggest complaint about KOTFE, actually. I just don't care about Zakuul. I found them uninteresting bad guys and worse good guys.

TOR got me playing because it presented a complex and fairly interesting world by Star Wars standards. Each class has their own tone for the galaxy and how the story goes, and that's fine. Adds replay value, and different classes see different sides to the galaxy.

Zakuul bored me to tears. Darth Vader and Princess Azula did not elevate the story.

I'm referring to Arcann (transparently a Darth Vader wannabe) and Vaylin (a sadistic womanchild of immense power with huge daddy issues - if you've seen the Avatar: The Last Airbender series, you know who Azula is). They're the two primary villains of Fallen Empire, and Vaylin at least is vaguely tolerable to me because unlike Arcann she at least seems to be enjoying herself.

Arcann's motivations and personality are straightforward daddy issues. Daddy never loved him, so he's hellbent on proving that daddy should have been proud of him and reserves a special hatred for daddy's actual favorite (that would be you, Outlander).

I mean that's what WoW was for a long time (and still sort of is from what I can tell) and one of the big complaints I've heard in their subforum here is that all the story arcs end with "And then Maiev/Tyrion/Thrall/Khadgar/Velen do the actual work of defeating the big bad."

WoW's been trying to have it both ways recently, with mixed results.

FF14 on the other hand has the entertaining explanation that yes, you personally did all the dungeons and bosses... but so have a lot of other people, because for various reasons the bad guys keep on coming back from the dead or get summoned again. Hard modes in dungeons and on bosses are legit different from the first time you did them in the story, this time they've come back stronger than ever before or whatever.

I actually liked Nadia, with the caveat that I was playing a lady Consular. I generally like the Consular a lot for being a properly wise, scholarly, diplomatic sort of Jedi and all the fighting is mainly a concession to game mechanics, and Nadia's relationship with the lady Consular felt like a really well done teacher-student relationship, maybe a bit of mom-daughter or big sister-little sister like most close teacher-student relationships tend to have. Sure, she arrives too late in the story to do much and too late for there being much room for her character and her relationship with the Consular to grow, but for a character whose actual personality is pretty bland I thought her relationship with the Consular was executed well.

So, as someone who hasn't played since before Eternal Throne, is the game still playable? I've burnt out on WoW for the time being and am looking for some [more or less] single player RPG goodness again. So I just finished a character through Knights of the Fallen Empire while I'm in free to play mode.

Those who have Eternal Throne, would I likely enjoy subbing for that expansion if I thought Fallen Empire's story was so goddamn bad?

I'm honestly not sure what's worse - a rotating cast of tedious and boring villains who only win or lose by plot fiat of who has more mojo in a given cutscene (Arcann, Valkorion, Vaylin), the PC having no choice or agency at any point in the plot, the hilariously overwrought bullshit about how Arcann and the Eternal Fleet are some epic threat unlike any ever before (and please don't tell me the story is going to force me to take over the Eternal Throne), or Zakuul itself being so incredibly uninteresting. I don't even hate Zakuul, I just want the story to decide that okay there really was nothing compelling or interesting about this place and let's just never mention it again. Oh, and can't forget the one female love interest available to a female PC suddenly being cold and dark-sidey when in Shadow of Revan she was remarkably relaxed and fun to be around.

I thought Shadow of Revan was generally a step down from the launch story (with exceptions, you can only go up from the Knight, Inquisitor, and Smuggler stories), but the quality of writing and quest design drops off a loving cliff in Fallen Empire.

And seriously, "Visions in the Dark" rivals the last five minutes of Mass Effect 3 for some of the most pretentious video game writing I've ever seen while failing to plot its way out of a wet paper bag.
