Okay well to add to this they did give me a little bump in salary, and I randomly found an email printed out where the main department boss suggested I get the rate I asked for but the new VP was like “I’ll bet we can get away with 1/2 the difference”

And someone else (main department manager) apparently recently pulled this off saying they were moving out of state in two weeks, and then they changed their mind, as if

Computer Serf posted:

it’s almost like (cool) main boss guy wanted me to see that because both him and the VP have their own printers but they do both compulsively print everything out and sometimes they’ll use the shared printer because it’s faster.

or maybe the gangster computer god was throwing me a bone on that one :worship:

Basically, he found the printed out e-mail, "went, oh my boss did this on purpose and wants me to ask for a raise" then pretended to have another offer.

Both my current and previous employers found ways to give developers local admin rights on their workstations. The previous one had loads of monitoring and everything ran on a vm in a walled off VPN (didn't even issue company laptops by default as you would just remote in to the vdi).

yeah, there a a few different ways to handle this.

privileged vm’s like you describe where the vm is walled off

I’m actually a fan of time-based access controls
where you have an automated way to request elevation for a short period of time, you can install your snowflake text editor, then your privileges are reduced to normal

there are other methods, some better, some worse

most likely because the work you developers do is directly on a product that makes the company money

the company is just seeing IT as an expense / road block

recruiter just forwarded me the take home exercise for a position, it is literally just:

quote:

Make an HTTP request to a webpage and store the body of the request into a file. Once the file is created, create a new file that contains the checksum of that file.

this is the kind of thing where they're looking for candidates to add some bells and whistles to stand out isn't it?

Not necessarily. Lots of people can't do that, or will make it needlessly complex or bad.

Now I'm second guessing myself.

Knowing that this position is an automation engineer type gig for azure + terraform + ansible, I was going to build it as an azure function that saves to blob storage and include the terraform configurations in my submission.

Would you consider this needlessly complex?

This was indeed the pro move and thank you guys for the advice.

I ended up doing a powershell example, a curl | md5 example, and a tf/azure function(python) example

They specifically called it out as one of the best submissions they've had, I was the only candidate to submit multiple languages, and one of two candidates to submit a complete application (not just for this position, but for overall hiring for this team)

as it actually happened, I was going through a recruiter, gone through the interview hoops, met my future team and it was framed as a please jump through these he hoops so we can actually send you the offer
