Thanks to Guavanaut for the former former former thread title ("Back to sad wanking and Anti-semitism") inspiration (who neither wanks sadly, or anti-semitically to my knowledge) Thanks to TomViolence for the former former thread title; "They raised a beetroot in the air and shouted gently caress capitalism!" (explanation starts on page 27) Thanks to Teddybear for the former thread title - my word it's been a busy month for thread titles! (explanation starts on page 133) Thanks to BizarroAzrael and Aphex- for their joint effort on the current (FOURTH!) thread title. Explanation starts on Page 216 - Amber Rudd resigns from cabinet, and replaced by Sajid "Egg" Javid! Following the previous month's ongoing smear campaign against Corbyn, a facebook post of his from 2012 was brought to light, in defense of a mural ("Freedom for Humanity") that was due to be painted over for its anitsemitic imagery. Artist, Mear One, defended his work stating that it was about "class and privilege", depicting both "Jewish and white Anglos", later writing, "Some of the older white Jewish folk in the local community had an issue with me portraying their beloved #Rothschild or #Warburg etc as the demons they are". Corbyn's defense was that he "intended to make a "general comment" about the removal of public art on the grounds of freedom of speech. He added: "I sincerely regret that I did not look more closely at the image I was commenting on, the contents of which are deeply disturbing and anti-Semitic. "I am opposed to the production of anti-Semitic material of any kind, and the defence of free speech cannot be used as a justification for the promotion of anti-Semitism in any form." While there's no defending Corbyn's severe lack of thought over the image he was initially defending, that spark turned into a conflagration of criticisms, both legitimate and otherwise, culminating in a rally organised by the Board of Deputies of British Jews, and the Jewish Leadership Council in protest against anti-Semitism within Labour. While there are legimate criticisms (Ken "Let me tell you about Hitler" Livingstone, newly (& now formally) elected NEC Labour Disputes chief Christine Shawcroft defending a party member who shared holocaust denial material without actual checking what he had shared, etc), the usual suspects are using the occasion as yet another excuse and attempt to bludgeon Corbyn, with there being even a smaller counter-rally being held by the Jewish Voice for Labour arguing exactly that. Corbyn was invited to spend passover with Jewdas (even bringing his own home-grown horseradish to share), and now the various media/twitter/MP pundits are having a meltdown saying that he's still an anti-semite because he's spending time with the wrong sort of Jew (read; Jews who are critical of Israel). Which isn't at all an anti-semitic way of thinking, no sir! And non-Jews deciding who are the "Good" Jews, and the "Bad" Jews. Short version; the veil has slipped, and it was an execuse to criticise Corbyn all along, (which is not to say antisemitism is an issue to be ignored), and also the more I hear about Jewdas, the more I get on board with them; https://twitter.com/geoffreyjewdas/status/981148615942004736 Like, they're really loving good: https://twitter.com/geoffreyjewdas/status/981476569783980033 Cambridge Analytica Another ongoing shitstorm, Cambridge Analytica LLC is a consulting firm specialising in data mining, and data analysis, controversially using that collected data to target individuals and intending to influence their voting intentions. And setting honey traps to discredit opposing individuals in elections, allegedly. Oh, and that data is from Facebook because of some app that allowed it access not just to the user's data, but their friends network, also. The CEO Alexander Nix, was suspended following undercover footage of him telling prospective users of the firm their MO for discrediting potential opponents in an upcoming election (honey pots, bribery stings, and prostitutes, basically). Alexander Nix, doing a poo poo Bill Nighy impression. They're still a dirty tricks brigade, but their actual impact and influence on world elections and events is questionable - nevertheless, investigations are ongoing, with a recently approved court order to remove documents and files from their HQ to investigate any abuses. Brexit In lighter news, Theresa May successfully pulled off a full Brexit, solved the issues of EU-UK trade tariffs, a solution to the Irish border that satisfies both the ROI and NI, and has even negotiated trade deals with the rest of the world in preperation for the day of our split with the EU. ... Alright, I had to get at least one April Fool in. As per usual, Brexit continues to Brexit. There's one year left for the deadline, and May et al. are still quibbling about stuff that the EU said was fixed and unchanageable from day uno . As for an actual poisson d'avril, fisherman's friend, Nigel "Salty Seadog" Farage took part in a demonstration against EU fishing quotas not allowing us to overfish entire areas of the sea, by...throwing a dead fish into the Thames. That'll show 'em. A very curious turn of events, given that Farage in his capacity as an MEP was part of the European Parliament Committee on Fisheries, and only ever attended one of fourty-two meetings, and neglected to vote on any legislation that would have improved fishing quotas or sustainability. I was on holiday for the middle of March and missed basically everything that happened after that (still catching up with the last thread). Not to kick things off again, but about this 1) does anyone actually care this time or do we expect it to blow over again? I realise this one's a bit different given he actually said a thing rather than it being a vague accusation of *something* happening somewhere in the party 2) has anyone yet figured out a way of saying "loving bankers " while naming specific bankers to be mad at, who happen to be Jewish, without coming off like a tinfoil hat nazi? e/ only just noticed it's from 2012, how loving desperate for a scoop do you have to be Renaissance Robot fucked around with this message at 07:31 on Apr 1, 2018 |

Renaissance Robot posted:I was on holiday for the middle of March and missed basically everything that happened after that (still catching up with the last thread). Not to kick things off again, but about this fresh Corbyn/antisemitism thing: 1) Internal polling suggests that it hasn't really harmed Jezza among labour members, but we'll just have to wait and see what it's done to perceptions amongst the broader electorate. 2) Targeting egregious individuals or nebulous elites, while an effective left-populist message, is probably the wrong approach. The reason xenophobia, antisemitism and assorted other crankery have so much traction is due to the failure of politicians and journalists to join the dots and offer an actual structural critique. Jezza's messaging around "a rigged economy" is probably the closest any mainstream politician's come to recognising that the problems are top to bottom and embedded in the system, rather than the fault of folk devils and hate figures, so he should probably just keep hammering that. I mean, yeah, there's gonna be some concern trolling about even that message, but gently caress anyone disingenuous or stupid or antisemitic enough to equate anti-capitalism with antisemitism.

I wonder about Israel shooting at peaceful protesters (at a protest organised well in advance) after a week of a very obviously organised campaign to smear a politician and party with form for not toeing the "Israel - good, all others = bad" line, as anti-semitic. I mean if we want to talk countries stirring up online controversy against critics, Russia are newbies.

I would say that rather overrates the importance of our approval to Israel. For one thing, on border control the UK has the sea on much of its borders and the Good Friday Agreement where it does not, and tends to uphold such porosity as politically realistic for the continent no matter how much it annoys them (our degree of good faith in this insistence can be seen in, e.g., our ferocious and largely successful insistence that the Calais migrant crisis remain in Calais). So we were always going to be snotty about opening fire on border protesters, however violent. For another, France is right there, and Melenchon is positively unrepentant.

Happy easter UK, don't know how you do it in the UK. Over in this part of Finland (the swedish speaking part), easter saturday means kids coming dressed up as witches asking for candy. Kinda like our halloween (so we don't need another one in autumn!). Then we burn a bonfire in the evening, also some activies like a lottery and sales stand (coffee, grilled sausages, hot lemonade, homebaked stuff etc). It's usually set down at the lake near my parents house. Due to the harsh winter and lack of good fuel it wasn't very big and didn't burn that well this year, the lake is still frozen too. The snow on top has a frozen crust that make for good play material, the kids can walk on it but we just fall through unless you got snow shoes. IIRC actual igloos are built using snow using this kind of snow.
