Happy International Workers' Day thread comrades! Okay, so the massive thing for the start of this month is the culmination of the Hostile Environment/Windrush scandal in the resignation of the now-former Home Secretary and human shield Amber Rudd. The Hostile Environment was a policy under the last Home Secretary (and current PM) Theresa May to make life as poo poo as possible for undocumented migrants in the UK. As pretty much anyone could have told you, this didn't affect the terrorists and gangmasters we were told it would, and fell on the easiest targets. This eventually led to the targeting of the Windrush Generation, people from the British West Indies who came to live in mainland Britain back when the British West Indies still existed. They don't have much in the way of documentation, because being British Subjects they didn't need any until the Immigration Acts defining British citizenship came along later. By that stage most of the former colonies had become independent or part of their own federations, so the Windrush people weren't citizens of there either. So there was an outrage about the government harassing a bunch of old African-Caribbean folks who had spent their entire lives in the UK, and Also Alex Jones (not the one from The One Show) and the usual crew are mad that he's a Pakistani Muslim, despite the fact that he's from Lancashire and, like most Rand fanboys, a 'culturally Christian atheist'. (They mean he is not white and has an Asian name ) Also thanks learnincurve for a kind offer for anyone affected by PIP: learnincurve posted:If someone wants to add that people can PM me about help with PIP to the thread’s OP then please feel free to do so. That organisation has direct ties to the Syrian government, if so.

Guavanaut posted:There was a relevant piece about this in yesterday's MS. Yeah, systemically it might be easier for older/whiter/manlier people, but poo poo still sucks for a bunch of Boomers due to austerity and land monopoly. 80% of wealth might be concentrated in the olds, but 80% of that is concentrated in 20% of the olds, and I can't help but think that the liberal/soft-left media attempts to frame this as a generational issue are deflecting. If it was purely generational then the Millennials would just need to awaiting their inheritance, rather than man the barricades. NWBTCW &c. I'd still argue that it is largely a generational issue, because the boomers have been indoctrinated to believe that everything is down to hard work and personal responsibility, that the rich are job creators who deserve what they have, etc. Someone on my Facebook feed posted a video about a homeless 19 year old who wanted to get a job and a home, but was literally barred by society because he had no ID, bank account or anything else that society dictates you have, and couldn't get any one of those things due to not having the others. The response from a boomer? "Can't blame society, it must just be bad parenting, he needs to take responsibility for himself". The generational wealth inequality could be dealt with more easily, except that boomers have had their brains poisoned for decades, and as we're seeing with the polls, that is as much a barrier to change as anything. This isn't a boomer thing though, there are plenty of young people who also buy into the idea that there are no such things as systemic issues and everything is down to personal effort. Just more Boomers believe that because more of them have actively profited from that societal framework. That's the point though - this shouldn't be looked at as a generational thing but a function of who controls capital regardless of age.

The hard Brexiter's are starting their movements it seems. They know after the Lords votes on the CU and forcing a vote on the final deal means only a soft brexit or no brexit will pass the houses, so its either they force a ultra hard Brexit or they lose. Longer they play the game the more likely a ultra hard brexit won't happen, as the public will see more and more that its a loving stupid idea given we have 0 deals and the country would likely become a basket case within a week.

kustomkarkommando posted:Its meant to be run by Jim Dowson, the perennial far right oval office Aha, it IS that group then: quote:Dowson relocated to Budapest, Hungary, and has been observed in several eastern European countries with his latest venture, the Knights Templar International (KTI), along with the former BNP leader Nick Griffin and a Hungarian anti-abortion campaigner Imre Teglasy. Dowson's last sighting, according to the Daily Mirror, was on the Turkey-Bulgaria border with the KTI supplying equipment to a vigilante paramilitary group, the Shipka Bulgarian National Movement, to hunt down asylum seekers. Dowson was subsequently reported as having developed close links with Russian extremist Aleksandr Dugin, with Dugin aiding Dowson in the establishment of a Belgrade office for his internet activity in support of the "alt-right". The presence of Dugin could explain the Syrian financial ties - and Griffins overt anti-interventionism with regards to Assad. That and the standard Nazi fare of "gently caress 'em if they're far enough away"

If you’re a teacher or looking to apply for a teaching job, knock a good £500-600 off your take home pay because you’ll be using it to subsidise all the kids in your class to stop them starving. Even better, when you take those kids to other schools you can compare how malnourished they are, nothing says modernity like kids shorter than their parents with brittle bones https://www.theguardian.com/education/2018/may/01/teachers-buy-children-food-clothes-mattress-funerals-child-poverty Ignore the funerals issue because every response from government will be that they’ve rightfully closed that particular problem.

In reality, it was Thatcher and Major and the meter and disconnect (and privatize and increase unit prices) policy for water supplies that led to the biggest increases in hepatitis cases in the UK in modern history, but why blame neoliberal policy when you can blame immigrant communities. I bet in more recent history the hostile environment of "look foreign? better be afraid of going to the doctors" has helped a whole bunch too.

He's not an MP whose done dodgy deals, not broken any laws(maybe) and is doing exactly what he's supposed to be doing and singing a little light hearted song that happens to describe what he is doing, so why apologise? Its almost as if he does, at the same time realise the whole setup is a total sham, that a situation where he employs a huge number of people on the smallest wage he can to reap the most money he can from as many of the rest of the people as he can whilst putting people out of work and business all so he and a tiny select few can be unbelievably filthy wealthy is something offensive when made light of. Like maybe, its a bad thing and everyone knows it is but... nah never mind.
