Fritz Coldcockin posted:That bit about Florida's Hispanic population is incredibly depressing. What the hell would make Republicans attractive down there outside of the ever-shrinking population of Cuban exile dickheads who still think it's 1960? I had read that ”socialism = Venezuela” arguments may have resonated with portions of the South American/Cuban Latino population in that area of Florida. I don’t know if the evidence bears that out at all but I guess it’s worth investigating.

Z. Autobahn posted:I feel like 3 states unexpectedly tipped the election to Trump. (PA, MI, WI) and those are the three states most likely to tip the next one away from him. Florida just feels too old, too red, and too unpredictable to really bet any hopes on. Consequently, I think we’re gonna see the Kamala Harrises, Cory Bookers, and other frontrunners for the 2020 nomination visit those 3 states a lot in the next year.

And Sherrod Brown won 11% of Republicans in Ohio. For all the talk of "people vote the party line and don't sway from it, it's all about turnout amongst your base", it doesn't seem to hold true. The right candidates and picking and choosing your message based on your state can and will get people to cross party lines. At least in these purple states.

It's like some people think the entire nation can only do one thing at a time, or that people are only dying of preventable illness due to resource scarcity. They're closing the one in my town......all these chuds that voted for Trump because they thought every business would magically do well once he was President are probably *regretting that now. *and by regretting it I mean finding some way to blame Democrats for it.

So yeah, the Cruze is what they made here. But GM has been telegraphing this for almost 2 years. 2 years ago they had 4,500 workers on 3 shifts and since then they've eliminated 2 shifts and were down to less than 1,500 workers. But yeah, the bigger blow will be the businesses that feed off of the GM plant, the trucking companies, tooling companies, etc.

Probably very minimally (but not nothing). It's mostly due to America's car-buying habits leaning more towards trucks, SUVs, and crossovers and GM's failure to see that and plan accordingly.

It's best to not believe GM when they blame Trump's trade war for this. It's an easy scapegoat but like I said, this has been in the works for years. That's not to say that trade wars are good or anything, just that it had little affect on today's GM announcement. I guess maybe it could have sped up their timeline, but that's about it. It's just hard for people around here to stomach this poo poo from GM when they announce a new crossover like the Chevy Blazer and that it's gonna be built in Mexico. I know the realities of the situation and why GM is doing what they're doing, but the realities of what a plant closing does to a community doesn't make it any easier to swallow.

Toyota and Honda’s crossovers outsell their compacts too. It’s not a unique thing to GM or Ford. But unlike Honda and Toyota, not a single sedan produced by the domestic manufacturers has the reputation of the Accord or the Camry. And they probably never would have. The Glumslinger posted:Also, aren't most of those import cars still built in the US, just states with laws that prevent unions from being formed? Maybe some. But not all. I think the Honda Accord is built in Ohio. The UAW tried to get a foothold in that factory back in the 80’s but never succeeded. But I would say that Honda and Toyota having non-union labor is at least part of their success. edit: Camry not Corolla Mahoning fucked around with this message at 23:58 on Nov 26, 2018 |
