Lazy and generic title, imo.

Doesn't really fit with the Craig filmography, either. Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre, all cool and evocative names. Then here we have No Time to Die.

I’d take pretty much any Craig movie over the majority of what came before, so the chances are good.

For me, Casino and Skyfall are top tier Bond movies, Quantum is good, and Spectre is middling with some standout moments. Craig’s tenure has been my favorite insofar as the tone of the films, the cinematography, and the way he plays the character. They have a potential lock on a great villain for this next one, so my hopes remain high.

Even if Spectre turned out to be pretty dull, its individual good parts and by virtue of having Daniel Craig in it place it as a Bond movie I’d rather watch than the bulk majority of the other ones.

It’s hard for me to go back to the pre Daniel Craig movies save for a select few. He’s just such a definitive take on the character for me, and Casino Royale and Skyfall are just about perfect.

I like Dan Craig’s Bond precisely because he’s played as “probably not a very good person”. He’s an assassin. I look at it as a reflection of the source material, which is hard to modernize without losing Bond’s characterization. In the Craig era it’s easy to believe you’re watching a government agent with some psychological issues that make him suitable to his kind of work.

I get the arguments that the shower scene is mysognistic and you’re correct, it’s probably meant to be. I certainly didn’t read it as a sweeping scene of romance and heroism. It’s established pretty early in Casino Royale that he’ll use women as a means to an end.

Whether or not it’s acceptable for a big name franchise like this to put stuff like that on screen anymore is up for debate. But it is true to the character.

I guess it’s just after all the camp of some of the other actors and the idea that Bond is the super slick guy with the gadgets and cars, it is super refreshing for me that they took on a harder edge this time around. I feel like Dalton was the closest we ever got to that, and to a lesser degree some of Connery’s work.

I can certainly understand the argument that it took some of the “fun” out of the series, and turns off people who look for that kind of escapism in Bond movies.

man nurse
Feb 18, 2014

I think they also touch on Bond’s caring side with Craig. Vesper, the girl in Quantum, the whole thing with Swan in Spectre and probably this new one. They do try to play both ends of the character, and his internal struggle with getting too close.

I think the film was great overall. It’s appropriate that they built up to Craig’s final outting being sort of a campy world ending plot of old, while still managing to be weighty, emotional, and brutal when it needed to be. There’s some flaws here, but I’m very satisfied with Craig’s arc and they remain some of my favorite entries in the series to date.

The theme song was terrible though.

I feel like the movie kind of knowingly handwaves away Safin’s ultimate motives in that scene with Bond and M where they’re like “What is he after?” and they just list off a few super bad guy traits and leave it at that. Like he achieved his initial goal, and now he just wants to do bad things because…why? I dunno, he’s just a bad dude, could be money or power. Who cares anymore.

Not saying that makes the ambiguity of his ultimate goal more palatable, but there’s definitely self awareness from the movie that he’s now just there in service of furthering the other character’s arcs along.

man nurse
Feb 18, 2014

Also I picked up on a little detail that’s probably another nod to Dr No. In the intro, when Safin gets shot up by Madeleine, and then springs back to life a bit later, one of the bullet holes is shown to be right where his heart is. The kicker is that in the book, Dr No is explained as having his heart on the opposite side of his body. Could be a little wink and a nod at people familiar with the character without making it explicit. Combine that with the literal Noh mask and the Asian decor elements on his island and, yeah. I think they were basically going for a “take” on that character without explicitly being like “Hey look, we’re doing Dr No!” Like more of an homage than anything.

Edit: thinking back, doesn’t someone towards the end refer to him as “Doctor” while they’re on his island? I swear I heard that happen at one point not to mention the title sequence opens with the colorful dots across the screen from the original Dr No movie.

Anyway that’s my Bond lore nerd thesis thanks for reading

People like to talk smack about the Craig movies but hands down I’d watch any of them before revisiting almost any of the older films, and I say this as a super fan that’s seen every single one many times. It’s hard to go back to “formula” Bond after the leap in quality of the Craig era, for me. I appreciate what it brought to the franchise and what they did with it.

Skyfall is very well shot and paced, has a good villain, is fun, introduces Q and Moneypenny, has some notable plot developments, and Bond gets to play Home Alone.

Not sure why it’s a mystery that it’s considered good or that people like to hate on it now? I think it’s easily Craig’s best film after Casino.

For me it’d go Casino, Skyfall, No Time, Quantum, and then Spectre. The entire group of them I’d take over all but a select handful of films from the franchise.

I think you’re mixing that part where he’s waiting for Carver’s wife to show up with this scene

https://youtu.be/NH85zxU4tqU

which is also quite a good scene sandwiched in that movie. Tense, dark, with a little humor for good measure. I enjoy that we get one of Brosnan’s grittier moments when he turns the tables and the Hitman pleads that he’s just doing a job, and Bond replies “Me too” before shooting him.

Not a very memorable Bond film, but still has some good elements.

I feel like the only person left on earth who doesn’t want to go back to the more campy fantastical Bond stuff. We’ve had the better part of like 20 movies of that poo poo to varying degrees, culminating in some truly awful stuff. Craig’s run was a renaissance for me. I love that they took the opportunity to do something more in line with the character of the books and tell a nice little self contained arc that was tonally very different from bog standard Bond. That was infinitely more compelling to me.

I’ve said it many times but after how high everyone was on Casino Royale after Die Another Day flatlined the franchise, it’s disheartening to me to see people turn on the direction the movies took. It’s like if people were to scream for Batman movies to bring back the nipple suits and stuff instead of being all grim and serious. Like, fair enough I guess, but that’s not what I want out of it personally.

man nurse
Feb 18, 2014

Many people bellyache about NTTD’s ending but I thought it was handled well and was a perfect way to close out this self contained Craig arc.

Other big complaints include the villain and his motivations being a big nothing but it didn’t bother me much, since the driving force of the story is the character relationships. I even like how the movie itself handwaves it away as being ultimately unimportant when M asks Bond what this guy’s deal is and he dismissively replies “money, power, the usual, whatever”. I think it’s appropriate too that Craig’s final outting featured a megalomaniac villain with world ending schemes and a hidden secret base island.

man nurse
Feb 18, 2014

I think in at least Craig’s case, and probably the book’s character, it’s kind of the logical conclusion. Craig’s Bond, who I feel is heavily inspired by the novels, is not particularly celebrated even by himself. He’s frequently portrayed as being unable to break away from his lifestyle, his profession, his emotional scarring, etc. He attempts to, like at the end of Casino Royale and Spectre, but he’s unable to maintain it. His life is ultimately going to lead to the kind of conclusion you’re referring to. It’s a much darker take than what the average movie goer would expect out of Bond, but I think it’s very in line with the tone of the source material.

man nurse
Feb 18, 2014

NTTD rules imo. It’s not the best Craig one, but it’s not Spectre or Quantum or whatever your least favorite one is. I realize I’m in the minority of loving the Craig era Bond, but I found it to be a really good overall capstone on this run.

My rank probably goes Casino - Skyfall - NTTD - Quantum - Spectre.

I would probably watch any of them over a majority of the older films.

man nurse
Feb 18, 2014

I don’t know who that is but I do remember being extremely skeptical of Daniel Craig’s casting until he immediately became my favorite Bond when Casino Royale hit. So I’ll reserve judgment on basically anyone they go with.

man nurse
Feb 18, 2014

I’m more anticipating what direction they go with tonally. I think there’s no feasible way to replicate what they did with Craig’s tenure. You’d either have to double down on being grounded and gritty or go back to camp. Craig’s was unique in telling an interconnected story as well. I’d be surprised if they did something like that immediately after.

Whoever they wind up casting I think the smart move would be to just have him be James Bond already and go on a mission. Just focus on making it a good movie without trying to reinvent the wheel again. And please for the love of God don't set it in the '60s.

I watched No Time To Die for the first time since it's release, not bad overall but fairly flabby and the action felt very going-through-the-motions. Sure looks nice though. I think people were pretty kind to it at the time because we were all so relieved Craig didn't have to go out on Spectre.

NTTD is odd because they obviously want to tell an emotionally affecting story and then they insert these classic bond camp elements into it like the whole Spectre party and the wacky scientist guy and poo poo. It’s like halfway Brosnan and halfway Craig. I still think it was mostly good and a fitting capstone.

man nurse
Feb 18, 2014

No Time to Die does kinda feel like it has its foot halfway into Brosnan territory. Camp elements like the goofy scientist, the eyeball henchman, the Spectre party, Felix’s goofball partner, the rival 007 subplot. Then the other half is deadly serious business as usual Craig. It’s a weird juxtaposition that holds the film back from being at the top of the heap for me. I still enjoyed it quite a lot despite that. I’d rank it just below Casino and Skyfall.

Yeah, although I feel it’s to a markedly lesser extent in Spectre. There’s not a whole lot of humor in it at all, which would be fine if the majority of the movie wasn’t super dull. The opening sequence is spectacular though, and I really liked the train fight which felt appropriately hard hitting.
