But just leaving discussion of this poo poo out in the open where any idiot can be influenced by it is equally bad. Historically censorship and deplatforming (unplatforming?) works really well at breaking up extremism, man. It's very difficult to rebuild communities when everyone is scattered to the wind, and a lot of people are too lazy and/or not dedicated enough to seek out offshoot groups. It doesn't end the problem but it's infinitely better than leaving it out in the open, because simple exposure to, for example, far right talking points does a lot to influence people whether they like it or not. A Buttery Pastry posted:I can totally imagine a show called Law & Order, presenting the audience with a God's Eye version of events, that is a total condemnation of police/justice system worship. Just have the show be a constant parade of officers shooting people for carrying toy pistols/cars/nothing, detectives railroading them, and politicians defending this. Like, don't even have a tragic "This is what the officer thought they saw and they're real sorry" clip to contrast with what really happened, just film shootings from the point of the cops while clearly showing that the person isn't a threat at all. I guess the closest thing to this is The Wire but even then some of the po-lice are occasionally portrayed as trying to do the right thing even if not a one of them are actually good people

forkboy84 posted:Is it a hot take to say that some police do try to do the right thing on occasion? Because ACAB doesn't mean literally every copper is scum, I always took it as more of a generalisation about the institution. In that respect The Wire is very right because the takeaway is that a handful of decent people trying to do the right thing makes gently caress all difference when the institution is as utterly hosed as policing is. That's why The Wire was good, because it pointed out that every institution in modern Baltimore is hosed because of politics and special interests and corruption. Individually there's well intentioned people in the police but there's also far more lazy grifters, morons, yes-men, thugs and politicians. It's not Breaking Bad in making the bad people cool, but it does do a terrific job of pointing out that the gangsters and dealers are people and some of them are good people in a poo poo place and some of them are absolutely as scummy as Commissioner Burrell. Oh yeah, for sure, I was being a bit facetious, The Wire makes it very clear who and what is to blame, and to its credit even the main cast occasionally get in on blatant police brutality. As you say though it doesn't really point to any conclusions and I guess I'm just leery of police protagonist poo poo in general nowadays (he says as he compulsively rewatches it). Like Boots Riley's criticism of BlackkKlansman Edit - oh and what happened to your friend is loving terrible, Camrath, and whatever happens I hope that therapist gets nailed. If you like playing d&d then good, you're having fun with people you like. The point of living, if it can be said to have any point, is to enjoy it, collectively. This is correct. Read classic literature or whatever because it is worthwhile, but only do so if you want to. Otherwise you're just setting yourself up to fail. It's not quite the same but I don't read nearly as much as I would like to/used to right now, but that's because I simply don't have the energy or motivation to do much that involves active concentration. It sucks but I'm trying to remind myself there's no right way to be and I'm not at fault Edit I am re-reading the Silmarillion at bedtime, because it's a fine sleep aid lol
