There's a third option, that it ends up like VTM:B and Alpha Protocol where it's a fantastic game but it goes unappreciated for years aside from a loyal cult fanbase.

As I said in on other threads gonna run a Colombo build because if this game ends up being as great as it looks that will be real fun. That build looks like it would be low Physique around the board, high Psyche aside from Authority (Which would probably be below average) and Inland Empire, low Motorics aside from Composure and Perception which would both be high, and average Intellect.

Going to look like a slob and bug the poo poo out of people with stories about my wife until they incriminate themselves.

Then I would probably just take the opposite path for a second playthrough and just go full Judge Dredd beating up everyone in sight screaming about how I am the Law and be a villain protagonist.

I also winced a bit at the whole "black person with theories on race" line but that's because it's hard to give game developers the benefit of the doubt because that sort of situation is so commonly mishandled. Meanwhile most of the writing and development philosophy we've seen has been nothing but extremely thoughtful, and given the recent cowardice of a lot of devs, it's refreshing to see someone speak frankly and loudly about how political their game is.
Yeah, that's side-eye inducing but as you said I'll give them the benefit of the doubt because they seem to have a solid grasp of what they are trying to accomplish and aren't whinging about how their game isn't political, which I'm getting really sick of AAA devs doing.

Hopefully the game pulls off what it looks like its trying to do and if you become an idiot racist you just end being up more of a pathetic loser that nobody respects.

That would be some strong rear end satire most games are afraid to commit to.

Really I'm not going to overhype myself but this game is also pretty much made me for as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if this game ends up not only competing with Bloodstained and RE2make as my GOTY but if it ends up being one of my favorite games in general.

Disco Elysium is doing what I wished a lot more RPGs would do and ditch the D&D combat.

You can totally have an RPG without a combat system, having to always have one has been holding the genre back for decades. Hopefully Disco Elysium can change things.

Oh yeah, Torment 2 had a lot of good ideas and was pretty underrated. Disco Elysium looks it will take what Torment 2 started (Lack of combat focus, failure can still be interesting, etc) even farther.

I will also have to add LISA to the recs along with KRZ if you're looking for more games that are well-written and have similar vibes to Disco Elysium. LISA is a different game mechanics-wise as its more of a JPRG in design but it can be hilarious one moment and then soul-crushing the next. I would suggest just stick with the base game though, the follow-up expansion, The Joyful, wasn't nearly as good.

I found Pathologic 2 too much of a poorly designed slog when I really wanted a version of Pathologic that wasn't that. Ice Pick can claim its their vision all they want, they just have always sucked at making decent game design.

Disco Elysium does a much better job about having themes around failure without you easily running into an unwinnable state twenty hours in.

Beat the game just now, really was fantastic and did I pretty well for being a sorry cop. I might at least replay the save I had right before the tribunal to try and prevent Kim from getting shot so he could still be with me for the rest of the game. I was fine with Cuno though because it gave a nice end to his arc.
