It is quite the coincidence how Russia keeps popping up in all these Trump scandals and how he keeps doing things that directly and indirectly benefit Russia even after barely surviving an investigation into whether he was conspiring with Russia during an election that was interfered with by Russia.

Edit: Well going by subsequent posts looks like there indeed is some more context here

Considering that it's specifically about tricking your mind into undressing women who never consented to be involved in pornography, it's really quite the opposite.

Ehhhhhhh people don't have to consent to be in your imagination. I know you probably are just saying it's "the opposite of quaint" rather than a definitive moral judgment, but it does strike me a little silly. Sometimes people jerk it to the Sears catalog and whatnot.

It's more about altering and sharing photos to be used as spank bank material without the consent of the people involved. IMO that makes it sketchier that just sharing around centerfold shots or actual professionally developed porn.

I'll concede that if I discovered I was the star of a bunch of weird "bubble porn" being distributed amongst a network of randos on the web I probably wouldn't be too amused.

It's definitely not a hill I'm willing to die on, for sure. If your original comment was a (perhaps unnecessary) reminder of "Let's not go crazy though, this is still a pervy non-wholesome activity when you get down to it," mine is certainly an equally unnecessary "Let's not go crazy though, this is below even obviously fake nudes and erotic fan fiction in terms of how much indignation we should devote to it."

A reminder that the moment Trump started to be taken somewhat seriously (for lack of a better term) was after "I like people who weren't captured" and he rose in the polls as a result.

There were indeed a lot of different things going on there, but I really do think there are a lot of folks that are a bit sick of the sacred cow status of the military.

Don't think I've seen this discussed. This IIRC is the first testimony to proactively say they didn't think anything illegal was said on the call.

Didn't this guy resign his position yesterday? This seems like an... odd path.

A reminder in this case that even if the call was technically legal that's by no means an exoneration. Even without the quid pro quo the call still represents an atrocious abuse of power that justifies impeachment on its own. There being an actual crime just makes it that much more clean-cut and damning.

How the gently caress can you call the Russiagate nonsense at this point?

There's definitely a contingent of D&D that gets all defensive and incredulous about 'Russigate' and it's seriously off-putting. Like we can connect-the-dots with Epstein and Cop-case witness murders but get low-key dissmissive with Trump being obsequious to Russia (and Russian interference in general).

I can't really fathom why except that I guess Russia = USSR = Communist = Leftist and it's all some dumb tribal thing, but it can't possibly be that stupid and petty can it?

It has nothing to do with it and it need not have anything to do with it. Criticizing people who are trying to use the plain fact of collusion as a shield from criticism of their own failures, doesn't imply that you believe the collusion didn't happen. It doesn't even mean you think it happened but it didn't matter. It just means that you recognize that, regardless of whether Russian help pushed him over the line or not, we have a loving problem with fascism in this country which is a direct result of Democratic leadership both in their failure to provide an effective opposition to the GOP and in their failure to make meaningful change to improve people's lives when they did have the chance. And instead of owning up to that after a disastrous defeat in 2016, they've instead concluded that Donald Trump would not have won save for Russia interference and that, therefore, they need not change a thing. They use it as a shield from criticism, and when called out on it they use this idea of leftists being secret allies of Putin as a cudgel against the left. It's extraordinarily dishonest and no one should stand for it.

This sounds really specific and 'inside baseball' to the point where I'm not even sure we're actually talking about the same thing.

 probably

Thing is that the criticism that gets directed at the left about this stuff almost always conflates what I'm talking about, with "oh so you don't think collusion happened at all then huh?" and this is a good example of it, actually. The post by sexpig by night literally describes Trump colluding with Putin, like as a plausible scenario, but because he doesn't describe it in the way you're supposed to (and probably because it's a sexpig by night post and they hate each other) Skex completely disregards that and replies as though he just read a post that completely denied that collusion happened. In fact I'm not sure it even registered that sexpig by night actually did just describe collusion - it's reflexive at this point for some people. And so this stupidity repeats itself over and over again.

Heh, I don't keep up with individual posters but it is funny because on its own that post reads like it was just throwing that "Russiagate nonsense" bit out there to appease anyone who might otherwise chime in with "you aren't taking that too seriously, are you, because let me tell you the real enemy is..." :goonsay:

Because yeah, the post was basically "This sure looks a lot like Russian collusion (but don't worry I don't actually believe in Russian collusion)."

This cannot be stressed enough: the Republican position is now literally Russian disinformation.

Yeah, it's more obvious than ever this whole thing's a sham. Guys, they're not scared of "Trump 's base" and they're not protecting Trump for his sake, they're protecting Russian interests.

It would be so easy for them to dump Trump and bring in someone else willing to say all the racist stuff and tax break stuff a little more coherently and without all the obvious crimes and organizational incompetence. If Republican leadership turned the media and propaganda apparatus against Trump the majority will turn against him because it's the main thing keeping him going at this point.

And they would get away with this basically scot free politically because all they would have to do is blame Russia! It'd be easier for them to form a nationalist authoritarian majority constituency with a bipartisan existential foreign threat that they could use to keep everyone properly freaked out and bludgeon the left with ("what are you, one of them loving commies?") and just live out Cold War II, and hell, if they're really lucky they might be able to eventually leverage all this into bombing Iran or some poo poo.

But no, instead of using any of this to their advantage they're bending over backwards and blowing any and all political capital they've ever built to keep an obviously criminal rear end in a top hat buffoon from getting impeached, keep their 40% in polls from ever venturing outside their bubble, and to extremely painfully cultivate a pro-Russian constituency in the US.

Whatever is motivating them, they're not even working for their own interests anymore, it's all about Russia.
