Any recommendations for a $5 or under game that is not a roguelike, maybe flew under the radar (AKA not a AAA game), and bonus points, is in the 10-20 hour range? Hard to find time for 80+ hour games these days with kids, job, house to fix up, etc. etc. I'm way more appreciative these days of games that tell their story in a concise manner and don't drag on forever.

Have a preferred genre other than non-roguelike?

Some things that are currently under $5 that were well received by goons:

Life is Strange Season 1: ~15 hours to try and save your friend as a photography student who can rewind time

Paper Please: ~5 hours to complete your job as an immigration/customs officer for Arstotzka

Antichamber: ~8 hours to puzzle through an Escher acid trip

SOMA: ~10 hours to complete this new adventure from the Amnesia crew

Hotline Miami 2: ~10 hours of rootin', tootin', and shootin' (I never did play the second one but it seems to be more of the first, which is also on sale if you've never played it)

The Shadowrun (isometric cyberpunk RPG) or Banner Saga (tile battle RPG with choices that drive narrative) games should also fit your requirements.

My main issue now is my ancient i5 3570K. Thinking about the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, but that also means new motherboard and RAM. I can never justify the latest and greatest for components, because that is just an insane amount of money. $200 for a GTX 1080 is a good bargain that should last quite awhile.

I'm gunna need to start bringing my new bluetooth controller with me and just game on my lunch break.

Edit: You know, now that I'm thinking about it, is there any way to run Steam Link through a thumb drive or a web browser? I love that I can play remotely on my phone, but if I could play remotely on my work PC without downloading anything to it that would be even better. I figure the answer's probably no, but it never hurts to ask.

Some Steam games don’t require the client to launch, so you could throw the game folder on a flash drive and go to town. I’ve only ever done this with Caves of Qud, but anything from this list should work: https://steam.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_DRM-free_games

You can remotely access your machine through a browser with the Chrome remote app and other similar programs, but I can’t imagine it would be very smooth.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's the closest thing to Final Fantasy Tactics I've seen in awhile. There are interesting classes and you can mix and match secondary, reactionary, etc. skills.

Some of the extra options can add a lot of difficulty to the game if that's your thing. You can also edit an INI file (the game files provide instructions) to make things as easy/hard as you want. I personally kicked up the job point earn rates a bit.

The story is standard fare, so if you are looking for something deep in your tile battler I would suggest something else.

On an insane side note, does anyone else get a tingle in your dingle when jumping down from high places in this game? It’s not immersive when I keep having to think about convoluted systems or check button prompts to make sure I don’t draw down on someone instead of talking to them. And the bounty system is a complete mess- I had someone report me for murder... because I killed their kidnappers. Which cost me all the money I had built up. It’s a Brink-level letdown for me.

Ok that sounds pretty bad. I also found a review from last month where there are hacking concerns. Trolls teleporting others, spawning cougars/bears on people, etc. Though I would hope the online component is separate from the single player campaign.

Rather than find something new, I decided to go back and play some classics. Today I started a ROM hack of Final Fantasy 6 called Brave New World. The new mechanics really spice things up. It also seems slightly more difficult without being punishing. I don’t know how much nostalgia is talking here, but FF6 still stands the test of time. I’d recommend checking out some of your favorite games from the SNES/PSX (hell may as well include PS2) era - most don’t require a lot of brain power or fast reflexes.

I’ve honestly never seen a dev so dedicated to his game. Terraria is often in the top 25 for number of concurrent players on Steam, so that may have something to do with it.

Speaking of Terraria, does anyone know if it’s possible to reset achievements? I know the SAM tool can untick them, but does that allow them to be achieved again through normal play? I’d like to start from scratch if possible. Achievements often help me discover things I wouldn’t find on my own, so a reset would be nice.

I once saw a demo of a tight rope (maybe it was a board?) between two buildings. A guy was trying to walk over it when a bystander lightly pushed his shoulder. I’ve never heard a grown man scream so loud.

I am sure nobody cares, but it turns out this was due to my aging 3570K processor. It must have been caching my inputs and making my character continue in random directions. I grabbed a Ryzen 7 3700X and a new motherboard over the weekend and the problem is gone. The 3570K had been great for everything else, even newer games than Youngblood, so that was surprising. Sounds about right. It’s fine. The levels are big and sprawling with some vertical options, but you only have a mini-map. There is no full map view which is baffling. There are only a few levels that you revisit and open up new paths in through various missions. I would give it a pass.
