I think RagnarRox should get some more love tbh.

He does a variety of games related videos, from game design to highlighting individual monsters in horror games. He has an accent that I am consistently flummoxed by even though I know where he's from.

The thing that killed TF2 for me was the decline of the dedicated server. I used to play on two really good, friendly servers with a cast of regulars that were both really good at the game and really fun to play with. The admins were also online very often and would kick assholes from the server. It was a great experience that Valve sabotaged and I haven't played the game since…

Pretty much everyone in the (movie) reviewer scene wants to do their own writing eventually, it's kind of inevitable.

I do prefer it when those skits are actually in service of the video though. Like, Philosophy Tube features a lot of skits but they are usually very topical and directly connected to the thrust of the video.

I didn't know about Patrick Willems before so the skits are just confusing. When the skits develop lore, they become too much.

I do like the more calm and collected internet creator people though.

I thank god almighty that a dev confirmed that the full voice acting will have a toggle for on/off also, because jesus christ, I don't hate any voice acting period, but I prefer to read most dialogue in an RPG, even more so one with a ten billion quadrillion word script like Disco Elysium, I feel like I'd go insane if everything was voiced while I was also trying to preferentially read it without just hitting my keyboard mute, especially even one more word from Cuno. The only thing I really want from the new update is the extra side cases that are apparently coming with it too.

I'm struggling through this in PoE2 right now. I start reading, then a few words in the VA cuts in and it completely scrambles my flow and I have to start over. I'm many hours in and it still happens. It's disruptive and unpleasant.

And I want to introduce some of the voice actors to the invention of the de-esser. Jesus Christ. It's not as bad as Grieving Mother's VA, but still…

but what's the alternative?

I'd just like to highlight Three Moves Ahead here because it ties into reviewers and being bad at games as well. It's a strategy game podcast by a number of people: Troy Goodfellow, Rob Zachny, Jon Bolding, Rowan Kaiser, and a number of people I forget. It's niche but really well made.

And one recurring theme in the podcast is what a game is actually saying with its mechanics. In the episode on Dawn of Man they discuss how strange it is that the game completely leaves out the massive societal changes that came with the change from nomadic to settled. The period massively drove specialisation and stratification of society, but none of it is reflected in the game's mechanics. In other words, people in Dawn of Man don't live in a society. That observation made me look at some other strategy games and I realised how weird it is that a game like Surviving Mars barely acknowledges society existing either.

I don't think you can start that kind of discussion withougt having a good grasp of the mechanics of a game. I consider it an important to engage with games not just on the textual level but subtext as well, and the mechanics are often the subtext of games. Like the Ur-example of Sim City demonstrates, the foundations of a game's mechanics are often deeply rooted in how someone sees the world, and that in turn influences what a game actually says.

And also, Rowan Kaiser was correct regarding Stellaris.

He was way too kind to the writing in that game. It's just…bad. Comically inept, cliched. I have no idea why the game has so much text in dialogue. It's no Planescape Torment, that's for sure.

And the encounter design… I've played with rear end in a top hat GMs before, and that was exactly how this game felt. Old Sycamore Depths and its deluge of weak encounters that do permanent stat damage was so much fun without a cleric because the only cleric at that point decides to go with the Obviously Evil Designated Villain instead, because he's so trustworthy. Just the freshest of D&D tropes.

I was not a fan.

A channel I’ve been binging recently is Josh Strife Hayes. He talks about MMOs, in particular roasting a bunch of terrible ones in his “Worst MMO Ever” series, which is exactly the sort of content I crave on Youtube.

But he does other stuff too, like his most recent video, which is about a cryptocurrency scam masquerading as an MMO. If you enjoyed laughing at all the people preordering spaceships in Star Citizen, then check this out because it manages to be even worse.

I scrolled through his channel and saw a video on Rizom. Hadn't heard that name in a long while. There's a really fascinating history with that project: It was a commercial flop but the community of the game really likes its roleplay and cooperative crafting, all assets and code were released after liquidation of the company, a few people got that mess into a state so it can run again and are hosting it ever since. I just checked and there are three people regularly committing code and none of them seem to be full time developers. There's some really interesting history here, it's basically a time capsule of a dead mmo from over 15 years ago.

Had to turn the video off. He comes of as a huge prick talking repeatedly of hypothetical fans of the game screeching as he, rational objective man, explains things that the people still working on the game do not disagree with. Last time I looked the remaining players were downright apologetic about the poor onboarding, and here's this poo poo heel arguing with his straw man fans.

The Stanley Parable’s major point being the player ultimately only having the illusion of agency in games because just left me going “yeah, and?” Like, yeah, games are constructed and almost all actions you can take in them, especially in their narratives, are accounted for by the creator. Pointing that out doesn’t feel deep or meaningful, and kind of misses why choices in games can feel meaningful

I think that's an incomplete read on The Stanley Parable. It is a game about a storyteller trying to tell a story despite a player using their powers to "evade" all that story content. That is obscured by the fact that the player doesn't control the storyteller, but as someone who has done a lot of DM-ing the game speaks to me. I've been that storyteller.

Also, The Stanley Parable gave use the Raphael Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ-IcS7mRSk, which is extremely Art. I love how the voice actor reads the "very emotional" bit :allears:

I don't play those games. I am actually having fun with games. I have so many of them, and so many good ones. I want to hear about more good games, or about something interesting about them. I hate Jacob Geller's beard with the force of a thousand suns, but he makes videos about interesting things in games, and I'm going to watch every single one of them. A video about the city in Disco Elysium vs. another video about how Ubisoft sucks is an easy choice. I already know Ubisoft sucks since they scammed me with Silent Hunter 3.

I think they should just use their subscriber count to highlight some good stuff. Those demos Steam has going right now are great. This is why Erika Fuchs is a German national hero by the way. The work she did translating Carl Barks left a lasting legacy changing the character of the comics in German translations in addition to leaving her mark on the language itself.

Erika Fuchs' Donald Duck often makes literary allusions that don't exist in the original works and it's one reason why in Germany, Donald Duck is far, far more popular than Mickey Mouse is.
