Random question. I've just noticed that I'm not paying anything for broadband. I'm on Three and on a rolling monthly contract. It was all fixed payments until September when they paid me £30, and from then they've been billing me for £0.00 a month. Service hasn't been interrupted in any way and I've had no correspondence saying anything's up.

You reckon just sit on it and wait for them to realise something's up?

Necrothatcher

Thanks all. I've been doing some research and apparently this isn't that uncommon with Three as their billing department is all hosed up right now. Going to wait for them to figure it out.

No deal Brexit's on for sure then, get a big delivery in of essentials, toiletries and booze if you can and get ready to ride out the next few months in a blissful stupor.

I wonder what insult it was that Boris eventually stammered out to make the EU roll their eyes and go "okay, gently caress it, we officially give up".

this, combined with the post-Xmas COVID surge, is going to make for a wild January

As far as I can see the only way to make this Zoom call work is to not take it seriously and turn it into a live-action pantomime in which you have an OTT Scrooge-like conversion to the concept of Christmas.

If it's a performance your niece will be entertained, you're not really lying if you're obviously playing a character and it's difficult for your sister to push back against silly ridiculousness.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Gentle ribbing about CUK was met with poorly concealed grimacing fury, so I decided to prod a bit further and give her poo poo for all kinds of issues and she basically got into a huff and walked off lol. A weird random question, but I'm writing a review of an Animal Farm game that's basically a choose your own adventure with light farm management aspects. I've always thought the tragedy of the book is that the animals' revolutionary ideals were correct but the tragedy is how they were perverted. The point of the game is that you can try other plots like ditching Napoleon early on and try other methods of animalism/socialism.

Problem is there is no happy ending in the game - every outcome of socialism in it is bad. I want to say in my review that this feels really cynical and something a committed socialist like Orwell wouldn't have agreed with. Does that make sense?

Is there an option where you can carry on with being run by the farmers and that's also terrible/even worse? Orwell would probably be down with "every option bad but some worse" more than "every socialist option has some ills".

So far the endings I've gotten are:

- crops fail, animals go feral and eat each other
- surrender and let humans take over, who slaughter all revolutionary animals
- all animals die in battle, farm abandoned
- authoritarian tyranny under Napoleon (basically the book ending)

There are other endings, but from what I've seen online none are particularly happy.

man I just had a depressing call with my Mum - she's a geriatric palliative care nurse and all her patients are dying.

At least she's vaccinated herself now.

Yeah - also I guess it's just going to be the kind of deaths that aren't going to be reported. Sure a lot of these people were going to die within the next year covid or no covid but there's this tension around that if you take a turn for the worse now there's no coming back from it.

surprised the Guardian published this:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/dec/31/joe-biden-us-pretence-israel-nuclear-weapons

quote:

"Apartheid was horrible in South Africa and it’s horrible when Israel practises its own form of apartheid against the Palestinians, with checkpoints and a system of oppressive policies. Indeed another US statute, the Leahy law, prohibits US military aid to governments that systematically violate human rights.

It’s quite possible that one of the reasons that Israel’s version of apartheid has outlived South Africa’s is that Israel has managed to maintain its oppressive system using not just the guns of soldiers, but also by keeping this nuclear gun pointed at the heads of millions. The solution for this is not for Palestinians and other Arabs to try to attain such weapons. The solution is peace, justice and disarmament.

South Africa learned that it could only have real peace and justice by having truth that would lead to reconciliation. But none of those will come unless truth is faced squarely – and there are few truths more critical to face than a nuclear weapons arsenal in the hands of an apartheid government.
