I’ve been watching blue planet 2 lately and it makes me think but what if uaps live in the deep depths of the open ocean? this is a sexy thought.

maybe only the sentient underwater mammals of the oceans know the universal truth of what exists out there?

thoughts on NDEs? is it possible to astral travel/meditate to that same dimension?

interesting how many of these experiences all sound very similar :tinfoil:

How long is the delay when controlling the rover?

toggle

SniperWoreConverse posted:

i think it works in the form of they need a nerd to script commands like move the grabber 420mm in this direction and rotate 69 degrees counterclockwise, and they upload them in batch form? And the delay between earth and mars is variable based on orbits and crap. I'm pretty sure the rover is too dumb to get less explicit commands, and the huge variation between when signals get there means they can't drive it like an RC car at all.

the bandwidth is like 10-3000 bits per second and has multiple antennas. Sounds like the space modem is on baud measurements less than 56k. The link from rover to orbiter is 2mbps max.

this is all based on me googling for 2 seconds and then also bullshitting half remembered stuff without double checking. The slower antennas seem to let the rover talk directly to earth in case the orbiters explode and require like 230 foot diameter dishes to be pointed at mars.

e: the actual signal delay is between 5 and 20 minutes one way

I want martian shitposters so bad, it would be insanely rad, and so weird.

Ah ok cool, thanks for that!

Those speeds sound exactly like australian internet!!

few weeks ago i spent some time out on a beach at night looking up at the milky way, first time i'd gotten away from urban light pollution in years, honestly felt pretty amazing and i highly recommend if you have the means

there was what appeared to be a satellite in the sky, slightly shifting colours, but it would sort of 'wiggle' around, moving around a patch of sky in ways satellites don't. i imagine it was a balloon or something with a light beacon on it, but the presently existing context at least made me pay attention to it for a bit until my gf wanted to go because it was cold

could of been space junk doin the ol tumble?

but yes, being out under a completely clear night really recharges the spirit

Possibly, but it was illuminated and held a generally stable position in the sky, just moving around within a limited space, like you'd expect of like a tethered balloon or a drone or some poo poo

hmm strange. would of been cool to see.

The Forums are a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those mods and admins so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless red text avatars visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this forum on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to report one another, how fervent their QCS posts.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position on the Internet, are challenged by this Alexa traffic rank. Our forum is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

Something Awful is the only forum known so far to harbor goons. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Forums are where we make our stand.

It has been said that posting is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our dead, gay forum. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the UAP thread in the lefist shitposting subforum of Something Awful, the only home we've ever known.

Early 2020 I was in the middle of nowhere along the Marlborough Sounds of NZ’s South Island doing some astrophotography, when one of the starlink satellites came hurtling along. Unreal to see it in such dark, dark skies but it also ruined my photos. Not a bird, just a fuckwit’s satellite. :(
