Abstract
The use of emotion in climate change appeals is a hotly debated topic. Warning about the perils of imminent mass extinction, climate change communicators are often accused of being unnecessarily ‘doomsday’ in their attempts to foster a sense of urgency and action among the public. Pessimistic messaging, the thinking goes, undermines engagement efforts, straining credulity and fostering a sense of helplessness, rather than concern. Widespread calls for more optimistic climate change messaging punctuate public discourse. This research puts these claims to the test, investigating how affective endings (optimistic vs. pessimistic vs. fatalistic) of climate change appeals impact individual risk perception and outcome efficacy (i.e., the sense that one’s behavior matters). The findings of three online experiments presented in this paper suggest that climate change appeals with pessimistic affective endings increase risk perception (Studies 1 and 2) and outcome efficacy (Study 3), which is the result of heightened emotional arousal (Studies 1–3). Moreover, the results indicate that the mediating effect of emotional arousal is more prevalent among political moderates and conservatives, as well as those who hold either individualistic or hierarchical world views. Given that these audiences generally exhibit lower risk perception and outcome efficacy in relation to climate change, the results suggest that climate change appeals with pessimistic endings could trigger higher engagement with the issue than optimistic endings. These findings are interpreted in light of recent research findings, which suggest that differences in threat-reactivity and emotional arousal may be attributable to brain functions/anatomy mappable to basic motivations for safety and survival. Implications for scholars and practitioners are discussed.

quote:

In the debate on climate change commentators often express pessimistic or optimistic views. We see this mainly in the media and popular literature, but also in various academic fields. The aim of this paper is to investigate different kinds of pessimistic and optimistic views put forward in this debate and suggest explanations of the diversity of views. The paper concludes that pessimism and optimism may concern, for example, climate change as an unmitigated or poorly mitigated process, mitigation of climate change or specific measures of mitigation. These aspects are important to distinguish, because a person can be pessimist concerning climate change as an unmitigated or poorly mitigated process and optimist concerning mitigation of climate change, and be pessimist concerning one specific mitigation measure and optimist concerning another. It is suggested that the diversity of pessimistic and optimistic views is due to the uncertainty of scientific climate models and the influence of evaluative and ideological assumptions.

there’s also a profound lack of curiosity and empathy on why people might come to think and feel the ways they do, as if these are invalid and people are rational actors.

And if you are having kids fully knowing whats around the corner, lol, lmao - I guess your children will truly know what its like to be owned.

where do you draw the line for individual responsibility? what if you work for an oil company? obviously being a clerk or pump attendant has no degree of responsibility. how about a regional manager? a marketing executive at international headquarters? the children of executives who have benefited disproportionately from said system?

the best vegan cheeses I've had have been from local vegan butcher/deli shops that make it inhouse. Costco sells a giant bag of vegan moz for a good price which works alright; it had kinda a vaguely strange aftertaste so I wasn't a super fan but it was fine on homemade pizzas with enough toppings. I preferred Trader Joes cashew cheese.

there was a vegan pizza shop that opened during early in the pandemic but sadly closed up earlier this year. it was really really loving good pizza though god drat, i actually preferred it over dairy-pizza. I wish I could get that 'moz.

is cashew cheese actually much better than cow cheese in terms of resource consumption? (not emissions, but one could also consider the emissions from its being shipped worldwide)

it’s certainly worse in terms of immediate human suffering

for whatever reason, what greta says seems to have captured the imaginations of a few people I know and they’ve taken more of an interest in our collapse and considered what it is going to mean to them beyond the mild inconveniences they’ve experienced so far. the people I’m talking about would read the bad news as it appeared and were broadly aware of the issues already, so there’s something about the emotional force she’s able to project that makes the connections more visible to a lot of people.

greta’s crack-pinging is happening faster than I expected and it’s good for the people who identified with her cause it gives them license to crack, too. it would have been more lucrative (and more probable) to take NGO money and say I loving Love Science, Cope! if that had happened I think some of these folks would have tuned out, but they did hear the “green new deal / build back better bla bla bla” and it’s like someone gave them permission to crack and move on to a newer stage where they picture in much greater detail what the future holds for them. many will probably conclude that they, personally, will be better off than everyone else and strive to maintain that. but some of these otherwise aggressively normal folks are picking up andreas malm or are more interested in understanding the responsibility of the corporations in all this, which is a little clearer for them to identify in our Post 2020 World.

i think a lot of people just don’t process the media very well without having a subject to observe and project onto, which is probably not unusual at all in human cognition. most of the climate stuff in the media before was really boring poo poo and charts that make you feel personally bad about yourself over things you don’t have that much control over.
