"Save us, Aaron Sorkin!"

(he nods smugly, grabs a kilo of pure Bolivian flake, ODs, and dies)

"Ah, well then."

quote:

Before Sorkin adapted To Kill a Mockingbird for the theatre, a different adaptation of the novel by playwright Christopher Sergel had been available for license for over 50 years. Claiming worldwide exclusivity for the professional stage rights to any adaptation of Lee's novel, lawyers acting for the company Scott Rudin formed to produce Sorkin's adaptation, Atticus LLC (ALLC), moved to shut down productions of the Sergel adaption staged within 25 miles of any city that ALLC determined to be a major metropolitan center that might eventually host a production of Sorkin's adaptation, even if that company had already paid the rights holders. Dozens of community and non-profit theaters across the US cancelled productions of Sergel's adaptation, as well as a professional tour planned in the UK. After a public outcry, Scott Rudin offered to "ameliorate the hurt caused" by making Sorkin's adaptation available to regional producers.

Threatening to sue high school drama depts with a company named after Atticus Finch, let Sorkin be Sorkin.

Like I have no problems with sports betting (and it’s fun every now and then), but goddamn those ads are everywhere…and not to sound too much like Helen Lovejoy, but I’m not keen on kids and teens getting bombarded with gambling ads constantly during sporting events or hell even at the events.

I did have a sensible chuckle seeing Patton Oswalt shilling for a sports betting site, especially after he had that routine a few years ago about being paid mid-five figures for one show at a casino but how it would be beneath his integrity to start doing that all the time.

Wonder how soon until an NFL player gets caught colluding with gamblers to miss a field goal to keep a point spread within an acceptable margin. There's way too much money floating around and NFL careers are naturally short anyway to make it inevitable.

Yeah there are stories out of the UK that show what we have to look forward to:

quote:

At no point during the soccer game between Stoke City and visiting Watford did anyone say, “Tonight’s match is brought to you by bet365,” one of the world’s largest online gambling companies. No one needed to. It was pretty obvious.

The game took place at bet365 Stadium, where “bet365” was stenciled across a huge swath of red seats, which were empty because of the pandemic. LED banner ads with the green-and-yellow bet365 logo blinked and rolled around the perimeter of the field throughout play. And every Stoke player had bet365’s insignia emblazoned on the front of his shirt. The company doesn’t just sponsor the team. The company owns it.

quote:

Because of that competition, fans 40 and younger grew up inundated with gambling ads. The subtext, and sometimes the text, was that soccer and betting don’t merely go together — they enhance each other.

“I trusted the messages that football sent me,” said James Grimes, who lost $140,000, two jobs and all of his friends before he quit gambling and founded the Big Step, an antigambling group. “A slogan that I heard a lot as a kid” — from Sky Bet, an online gambling company — “was ‘It matters more when there’s money on it.’ And I believed that.”

Then it was discovered how much of the iconic dialogue was lifted without permission from Thomas Ligotti & HBO geared up their PR dept to deny it, instead of giving him proper credit & at least a six figure check.

Is he good or is this a case of the enemy of my enemy is my friend?

When I saw that guy start to pop up I immediately thought Lincoln Project 2.0. Oh wow, the big insider info is Sarah Palin was unqualified and Meghan McCain is disliked? And he’s acting like this is top secret or useful? He’s even got the little Resistance logo in his image corner.

His substack has the title “no books, no money, just the truth” wonder if the plan is to try to become a talk show regular. If he had something in the ballpark of the Access Hollywood tape on Greg Abbott ok now we’re talking but this just seems like nothing.

Japanese 7-11 is awesome. Good bowls, sushi, whatever. I always ran through if I didn't have time for a meal.

One owner tried to push back against 12 hour work days by closing between 1am and 6am so they built a replacement 7/11 in his parking lot.

quote:

HIGASHI-OSAKA, Japan — Across Japan, it can seem as if there’s a 7-Eleven on every corner.

Now, on a single corner in a working-class suburb of Osaka, there are two.

The unusual pairing is the latest manifestation of a grudge match between one of Japan’s most powerful companies and, arguably, one of its most stubborn men.

Mitoshi Matsumoto, a franchisee, ran one of the two 7-Elevens until the chain revoked his contract in 2019 after he dared to shorten his operating hours. For over a year, his store has sat empty as he and 7-Eleven have battled in court over control of the shop. Fed up and with no end in sight, the company decided on a stopgap: It built a second shop in what used to be Mr. Matsumoto’s parking lot.

quote:

7-Eleven has gone to surprising lengths against Mr. Matsumoto. It hired a team of private investigators to watch his store for months, collecting grainy video that, the company asserts, shows him head-butting one customer and attacking another’s car with a flying kick. It has also compiled a dossier of complaints against him, including one over a bungled giveaway of “commemorative mayonnaise.” And now it says it plans to charge him for the cost of building the second shop next to his.

The company maintains that it moved against Mr. Matsumoto simply because he was a bad franchisee. But he argues that it is no coincidence that the company’s view of him dimmed sharply after he said he would defy its rigid demand that stores stay open around the clock.

Before his seemingly small act of rebellion, the company had deemed him a model worker. He had received praise for, among other things, having the highest sales of steamed pork buns in his region.

quote:

He went to the news media and described the industry’s harsh labor conditions, including his own days working 12 hours or more. His story hit a nerve in a country where overwork is rampant and sometimes fatal.

His willingness to criticize 7-Eleven in ways that most other franchisees would not made him famous. It also cast a light on the hidden costs of ultraconvenience in Japan, where convenience stores fulfill many of life’s daily needs and are often held up as symbols of the country’s remarkable efficiency and customer service.

7-Eleven stood down in its clash with Mr. Matsumoto over his shorter hours. But his relationship with the company, which had always had some problems, reached a breaking point in October 2019 when he announced that he would close the store entirely for one day, on New Year’s.

In late December, 7-Eleven notified him that it would revoke his contract unless he took unspecified action to restore a “relationship of trust.” It gave him 10 days.

At least three people who attended the birthday have tested positive so yeah they’re not thrilled with him at the moment.

He knows another guy so bad with money that despite making six figures, twice a month has to haul poo poo to a waste disposal site as his trailer lacks a septic tank and saving for a down payment would interfere with buying dogecoins/drones/another SUV.
