Do you all remember the close combat series? I used to love playing the WW2 ones when I was a kid. What happened to that series?

What's the big appeal of Europa Universalis? I've tried it a few times and I just bounce off. I'm a huge fan of CK though so it might be extreme biases at work here.

John Charity Spring posted:Company of Heroes has always been pretty heavily into the myths of the elite wehrmacht and invincible German tanks and all the rest of the baggage that goes with popular western WW2 history. The first one was a great RTS in spite of that, the second lost the spark and had a very... Canadian... perspective on the USSR to boot (the campaign was all Soviet war crimes and the Germans were squeaky clean even though it was from the Soviet perspective lol). It's a fun game, I used to love close combat growing up although the 2nd games campaign is 100% nazi apologia.

my dad posted:Quick tip for Starsector: Set a "Defend" (not escort) order on your flagship, it keeps your fleet vaguely centered around you (and able to support and protect you and each other), and you can still issue "take that control point", "try to kill that guy", "kill that guy or die trying" or "stay the gently caress away from that battleship you loving idiots it can one-shot you before you even get in range" orders without having to think too much about the specifics. Your fleet will detach an adequate number of ships for the job and return them back to the blob as needed. lol wtf, i will use it now John Charity Spring posted:Starsector is so good, you're making me want to fire up another campaign the game is incredible, genuinely everything i have watned from a game

I enjoy a sci Fi twist where enlightened colonists leave earth assuming it's doomed, but the teeming mass of humanity manages to survive and eventually claw back to some level of technology. The earth survivors might even have some resentment toward the opportunistic/cowardly defectors that left them to die. gradenko_2000 posted:The AOE 2 campaigns are very good: they're deep enough to be a legitimate challenge, but not so demanding that you need to be multiplayer-competitive to stand a chance. I played through the Italian and Byzantine campaigns last year and it was great. I think over the lifetime of the game they've added a campaign for every civilization by now, which is an incredible amount of single-player content even if you never dip your toes into multiplayer. theyre really good, i was completely blown away by what they added in the expansions to that game
