WAR CRIME GIGOLO posted:The situation at bakhmut appears to be grim. The bridge is leading to the east of town have been destroyed as Ukraine continues to move troops to the west side of town. Now there's a pretty large water crossing on the east side and I would surmise that Russia is going to close in the pincers instead of going off frontal assault on this but that could definitely be wrong. Russia also attempted a massive armored assault at Vuhledar that went spectacularly wrong with them losing a total of over 100 tanks and BTRs in one day. On the 'Kadyrov is dying' front, this also happened: https://twitter.com/Gerashchenko_en/status/1631978452944404480?s=20 I can see this kind of 'boy-king' thing working for the Kim dynasty since they spent decades building up the family as gods and have the massive state-level structures to support it, but I don't see it lasting long in a place like Chechnya where Kadyrov dying would likely result in lots of internal infighting and purges. HonorableTB posted:That's because Bakhmut's purpose has changed several times over the course of the war. It has been a prepared defensive position even before the 2022 invasion, and when Ukraine retreated from Severodonetsk, Bakhmut was the planned fallback position. It's first purpose was to attrit Russian forces, which was much less strategically important compared to the Kherson and Kharkiv counteroffensives (and indeed was crucial to the Kharkiv counteroffensive because the Bakhmut actions during the summer of 2022 drastically depleted the Russian forces in Bakhmut oblast to compensate, opening the door for Ukrainian advancement). At this point, Russia's sunk cost in terms of lives fed into the grinder and machines turned to scrap while trying to take Bakhmut is enormous. Putin is likely just desperate for something he can sell to the Russian people as progress, even if any victory in Bakhmut is entirely pyrrhic.

You have to be pretty goddamn ignorant/stupid to risk your life trying to intimidate an unmanned drone to the point that you collide with it though. The only thing the drone pilot in an office in Nevada sipping a coffee likely thought was "WTF is wrong with these people? Are they drunk or suicidal?" To note, countries toe the line with military planes in international airspace all the time. They fly near a border, the other guys send planes out to let them know they see them, and that's just how the game works. Even before this, Russian pilots were generally notorious for being a bit more slipshod when it comes to this dance.

Moldova did just change their official language back to Romanian from Moldovian, as the Moldovian language was basically invented by the Soviet occupiers. Either way, as long as their weird Russian-libertarian breakaway region exists (which Russia was trying to connect to by taking Odessa), nobody is going to want to touch them.

Shaman Tank Spec posted:Yeah for those who don't know, the Kamchatka was a Russian supply ship on the Voyage of the Damned, who nearly started a war with the United Kingdom. Off the coast of England the Kamchatka decided she had spotted Japanese torpedo boats (OFF THE COAST OF ENGLAND. JAPANESE. TORPEDO BOATS) and started firing at them. They were British fishing trawlers. In the ensuing fire fight the Russians managed to kill one British sailor, but also one Russian sailor and a Russian chaplain, therefore managing to lose a naval battle against a handful of unarmored fishers. Man it would be nice to live in a country where THAT is considered "right wing". "Right wing" in the European sense generally means "this is our country, and our programs and resources are for our people", with varying degrees of anti-EU/anti-minority/no-homo/Putin-rimjobbing sprinkled on top depending on just how far right. They're left of US politicians in the sense that they generally don't want to (completely) gut social programs, but they are very much "this is are country" in every other sense. Russia's doctrine of deporting the native populace and moving their people in means that countries with human rights and minority protection laws don't actually want that territory back, because they don't want to inherit hundreds of thousands of Russians. China don't care and would likely either deport the current inhabitants back across the historical Russian border, or re-educate them a la the Uyghurs.
