The National Transportation Safety Board provided new insight Wednesday night into why the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed so suddenly after being struck by a cargo ship that had lost power.

It was a “fracture critical bridge,” meaning if one portion sustained enough damage, the entire structure would collapse, said Jennifer Homendy, chair of the NTSB. Of the roughly 615,000 bridges in the country, about 17,000, or less than 3%, are fracture critical, Homendy said.

”The preferred method for building bridges today is that there is redundancy built in,” she said. “This bridge did not have redundancy.”

This statement seems like it has the potential to mislead people into thinking the key bridge was an outlier. The vast majority of bridges are probably just several feet long or some concrete structure going over farmer jim bob’s creek or whatever, not spanning a long enough distance to require a complex fracture critical truss system. I’d like to know the proportion of bridges spanning an equivalent distance as the key bridge that are fracture critical, because it’s probably more than 3%.

I was thinking about this. Do people in normal jobs not learn how to use form letters? Like, are most people expected to write all business correspondence from scratch each time?

Because, if so, then using ChatGPT to write emails is functionally the same as Webster's New World Letter Writing Handbook, only you are giving your work information to Open AI.

I think it's just the erosion of social bonds. Bowling Alone talks about this and so does Alone, Together.

For the low price of $35 a head, your organization can pay microsoft to have chatgpt to stare at your emails constantly and generate replies at the touch of a buttom

So chatgpt basically emails itself back and forth and it “owns”

The local amusement park had a swimming pool that could be chartered by community groups. When desegregation was mandated by law, they filled the pool in and told black people to go gently caress themselves. We eradicated our third spaces because black people might use them. God drat America.

I can't speak to everyone else but I hem and haw over buying a game that's on sale on steam for a handful of bucks despite probably enjoying it so the idea of going out to whatever trendy brewpub opened in the area and spending 30 bucks for a beer and basic entreee is both the most common invite and something I'll 100% ghost on when it comes up. Hanging out is expensive.

There's stuff that's cheap or free and I've certainly done it with new work acquaintances, but it's rare because there's a cultural element that makes inviting someone over to share variety pack and play bonanza or w/e a substantially weirder ask then agreeing to drop a couple hours worth of wages each on a mediocre outing.
