Further thoughts on The Price now I've slept on it; The writing isn't entirely terrible in its potential (Troi gushing about chocolate sundaes because she's A GIRL aside) and the final "I'm not your mum, you loser" scene is great, but the execution feels like everybody had no confidence in it. The mirror room workout is pretty indicative of that. Two women having a fairly grown up, casual discussion about sexuality, that's neat! Would have made for a fairly decent Ten Forward scene, them having a friendly drink. But how are you going to keep the boys interested while all this GIRLY ROMANCE TALK is going on? Oh.

Does feel like her usefulness nosedives the moment Guinan steps in.

The other good part of this episode, if I am remembering right, is that there's a good scene with Riker where the creepy guy tries to go alpha on him and Riker responds in a pretty healthy way, basically saying Troi can do what she likes if it makes her happy. It's a nice bit of healthy masculinity from Riker.

And one doctor too.

There's at least a second doctor - Dr. Selar as played by Suzie Plakson. Only one on screen appearance, but she is mentioned a few other times during the series.

Starship Mine is a great episode, come at me haters

One of my faves as well. Action Picard may be annoying when you get to late stage TNG movies, but the balance is perfect in Starship Mine. It's a refreshing change from the usual TNG episode structure and tone.

In Frame of Mind, Riker is a bit out of sorts. We know this because his hair is unkempt. I feel like I've already seen better versions of this already, not least Schisms from earlier in the season. Oddly unremarkable, given the amount of hysterical overacting Frakes is doing. And that's just in the play.

Frame of Mind is one of my top TNG episodes, largely because it very much feels like an episode of The Prisoner, and that loving rocks. Plus Frakes is fantastic at the unhinged look/acting and I will take it any day.

Weirdly enough my watch over the last year and a bit (I’d never seen TNG end to end before) had me appreciating Wesley a lot more. As a gifted kid myself, Wesley annoyed me as a Trek-watching kid, because he was just like me and I was tired of watching kid’s media with smart/special kids showing all the adults up. I watched Trek because it WAS about adults, shut up Wesley!

But now in my mid-30s I can appreciate what the writers and producers were doing with him more, some standard kid plots and other stuff with Trek-specific twists. And once I got out of S1 he started to take his lumps in addition to being a wunderkind, which gave him some much needed depth.

I also like Wesley more now than I used to, and I get kinda annoyed a bit with the 'Shut up Wesley' stuff. One of things I like the most about TNG is that there is rarely any manufactured conflict between the members of the cast (at least when they are all in their normal state of mind/not possessed). Picard largely encourages the crew to speak up and give opinions on whatever problem they are facing, and if someone says 'hey, something weird is happening', they check on it.

Sure, Wesley isn't actually crew for most of the show but he is shown to be loving smart repeatedly, so when they don't even bother to listen at all, to me it comes off more as bad writing for the rest of the crew.

If I could make one sweeping change to TNG, it would be to get rid of the Betazoid empathy/mind reading stuff (its obvious that the writers were not good at working around it when it would ruin their plot and made Troi seem incompetent instead), and then change Troi's position to something like diplomatic officer, or first contact specialist, or xenopsychologist, or whatever you want to call it. Her role should have been trying to work out the rules around the brand new cultures they encounter - she does this anyway, and the ship runs into enough new stuff that it would make sense for a bridge officer to be dedicated to it. She could even still have a role as a counselor since she would have a background in the psychology of many different cultures.

And without having to write around the telepathy stuff she could get stuff wrong without being an idiot, it's a hard task, and wouldn't get mind-raped so much.
