In this diseased loving country it would just teach people to be more abusive to retail staff, cause I got shat on when I was doing that job, so it's normal and expected and why should they have it any better

It also unfortunately teaches you that most of the time you have to be an absolute oval office to get what you want out of most customer service interactions because if you’re nice about it you’ll just be fobbed off.

I’ve never done retail but I’ve done a lot of hospitality and I’d have been mighty pissed off to have a bunch of Young People And Their TikToks who were being forced to be there foisted on me.

Dozens of members of Britain’s land-owning aristocracy have claimed under the taxpayer-funded furlough scheme to pay staff at their ancestral estates and personal businesses.

The latest snapshot reveals that claimants including companies owned by the Duke and Duchess of Rutland, who are divorced and live in separate parts of the duke’s ancestral home, Belvoir Castle, which sits in 15,000 acres of Leicestershire parkland and has featured in The Crown.

Treasury disclosures suggest that the pair made four claims of up to £10,000 in December, increasing the amount to between £10,000 and £25,000 in January when a national lockdown took hold.

They also own the Engine Yard Cafe & Bistro and a clothes shop, the Duchess Gallery, which claimed up to £55,000 between them over the two months.

The duke, a former Ukip supporter, was listed as having an estimated wealth of £125m in the 2013 Sunday Times rich list, although he sold an item from his art collection, a painting by Van Dyck, to fund the estate’s upkeep.

Full nazi, worth £125 million, scammed the govt during covid, complaining how its hard it is living like they are.

Yeah ‘external’ RAID is achieved with a NAS (or if you want something even less technical, a DAS which connects over USB instead) box with more than one drive in it, you just buy the enclosure then just 2 drives of your desired size and you’re away.
My hope (and maybe this was a misunderstanding on my part) was that I could buy 2 5tb HDDs, plug them both in, set them to mirror, and then if a sector on one fails, the other one has it backed up. But like I say, I have no idea which manufacturers are good, what price range is reasonable, what features are needed etc.

It's not the space I need so much as the reassurance that if I wake up one morning to find out a drive has carked it at a hardware level, it means just buying a new drive and a bit of setup rather than being like the goon who lost all their photos (and I'm assuming docs / movies / porn from back when :filez: was easier).

Seperate question, why has the defence secretary resigned?

History Comes Inside!

That’s not RAID so much as it is just backing up to two separate drives, which is just as valid an approach really if all you wanna do is keep your poo poo safe!

Depending on how much stuff you're looking to back up, you might find it more cost effective to just use a cloud backup service.

If it's just your photos and documents, then something like idrive is pretty cheap

https://www.idrive.com/pricing
10 dollars a year for 500gb, you'd get quite a few years peace of mind for the price of 2 hard drives (plus the cost of running them and replacing when required)

Bear in mind as always that ‘the cloud’ is just ‘someone else’s computer’ and is just as prone to failure and data loss as anything else sometimes, as a bunch of people found out last week.

If it’s stuff you can’t bear to lose having multiple backups is the way forward, don’t rely on just one type.

It doesn't appear to have any significant reason apart from Wallace resigning. There's probably going to be another more significant one in the next month or two so they can rotate out all the people that are standing down next election.

That's computers for you. Though if attackers were able to encrypt all prod and backup data, then you've gotta question what kind of Mickey mouse operation they were running.

You're right, of course, multiple backups in different locations and devices will always be best, but then you're back into price considerations. If you want to be reasonably sure your photos will survive drive failure, but don't want to spend a lot, it's definitely an option

Reminds me of that tweet about how people who know tech only from the consumer side have houses kitted out with networked smart appliances so their toaster can tell the fridge to order more bread; and people who work in tech MAYBE have their printer connected to the wifi, but also keep a loaded gun next to it incase it makes an unexpected noise.

There's an apocryphal story about a guy who couldn't access his office365 subscription for work because his son decided to have a heated gamer moment on his account. I think they seperate the accounts now, but there were a few stories like that in the early days.

For backups the gold standard is the 3-2-1 system.

- Three copies
- Two media types
- One copy being off-site

If you have a decent budget.
Then a NAS with a regular automatic cloud backup and weekly/monthly cold backups (ie a external harddrive) is excellent
A decent NAS with storage wiill set you back a £300+ though.

If you are on a budget then an externall HDD + cloud storage such as backblaze unlimited can be had for very little £5 a month and the external drives is £50ish depending on the size you need.

Always go with a cloud providers who's main business is backups. Companies that bundle storage as part of other products are less reliable and often change their terms on you.

Socialism 2023 conference for anyone interested. 1st - 3rd September.

It's live in Chicago but there's a virtual stream alongside. You do have to register though.

All times for the programme (listed on the link) are in "Central Daylight Time" which I think is 7 hours behind us so 5pm Chicago time is midnight here.

https://socialismconference.org/virtual-program/

It's not free but seems you can get a virtual ticket for $7.18 ($5 + fee). Not quite sure how it all works!

They'll be replaced by cladding which will also have to be pulled down in a few years when it's finally proven to be just as dangerous.

By that point the construction industry will have moved onto another cheap and dangerous solution. Presumably L-shaped houses full of wires that eat you like the computer in Superman 3.
