To be fair, CCP has been trying to make logistics as much of a pita as possible pretty much since day 1. The only reason they actually introduced freighters at all is because the playerbase told them there was no way anyone was gonna try to build endgame stuff (outposts, supercaps) in any significant quantity otherwise. e: and CCP really wanted people to build endgame stuff circa 2006 because there was such a glut of raw material on the market that the economy was very close to collapsing entirely. Turns out that advertising a weekly pinata party days in advance tends to attract party crashers, who knew and yes the escorts were completely ineffective against anything except small gate camps because there was no combat doctrine or ship reimbursement and the money wasn't good enough to compensate for sitting in a fleet with a bunch of mouthbreathers for three hours
