OK, I'm feeling a bit weird here, but I wanted to post about EVE, so I'm gonna ignore the dipshit posting drama going on.

Recently, I gave in to addiction and revived one of my old accounts again. I then spend an entire evening unfucking my awful overview and working on fits.

Can I say I love the Anathema? The little flying egg is the only covert-ops I could give some guns and tackle without compromising my exploration fits.

And needlejacks are the best. Sure, wormholes are great, too. But nothing beats the simplicity of taking your explorer and just beaming yourself to a random part of the map.

And then preparing a safe spot and logging out, because you spend all the free time of your day on overview settings.

Stories like this always make me a bit melancholic. It makes me remember the time when I was a newbie having trouble with Dagan myself. But because I have the wrong type of personality to ask for help, I simply looked at my tools, realized I could do more damage by putting five weapons of the same range into my Thorax, failed again, looked again at my options, realized blasters did more damage and fit them instead, put in a couple combat drones for good measure, and finally won. This took me about an hour longer than it should have, and my Thorax died to Dagan nearly three times.

At no point during this ordeal did I ever think of the possibility to just ask for help. IN D&D terms, I think that would make my alignment Chaotic Stupid.

Is it worse than the alternative of smaller groups getting smashed by bigger groups when theyre not on? How could ccp counter both?

One possibility could be a balance factor the game calculates based on number of pilots, combined total wealth (ships, modules, money, etc.), combined total skill points and a heavy modificator based on if they have people online or not, and make that balance factor adjust what the bigger group can do to the smaller group.

Like, if the bigger group is 10x+ stronger according to the BF, structures of the weaker group suddenly can't be destroyed, if it gets even more uneven, the weaker group doesn't take damage anymore, etc.

Would be a neat way to just discard all those weird timers everywhere.

Thats an interesting idea, but sounds like people would find a way around it or to abuse it. And if its giving complete or significant amounts of invulnerability at scale then people definitely will.

True, most possible solutions eventually run into the problem of people who want to win at all costs clogging up the system. Most other MMOS have given up long ago and just made PVP and PVE servers be disconnected from each other.

The most interesting example of this isn't even a real MMO: NMS has opt-in PVP, so you can in theory gently caress up other player's bases, but if you just want to build in peace and maybe have a random player stumble upon your manifesto to your own madness, you can just not opt-in. (In fact, due to financial reasons, I'm not paying for Sony's online service, which means NMS is basically PVE-only for me. I can still visit players and vice versa, it's just not possible for me to actually meet another player.)

The sad thing is, EVE's main draw is PVE+PVP all on the same shard, so the "solution" of other games to not do that kind of doesn't work, to put it mildly.

I still think this poo poo should be better balanced than loving timers on everything, like it is now.

Couldn't you get around this by staggering your bomber squads with some good timing? Send in a bombing run of 7x bombers first, and then send the second one in time to launch bombs, so the first wave is already safely exploded 1–2 seconds before the next wave hits, and so on.

Nowadays with voice comms and poo poo that kind of coordination should be possible. Just collect 49 friends and train them in separate squads against some dummy targets in your own space until the timing works, and you are go.

Are there even other players? I tried a little bit, and my experience so far was:

-Walking up an incline I suddenly got a warning to turn back to the mission area, but I got killed before I could even turn around, yikes
-Second try, walking into a different direction, enemies with names like "Grunt 69" showed up, I assume bots. I killed two of them by simply slowly walking towards them and firing my dinky little gun. Then an invisible enemy somewhere behind me killed me again.

Then I called it a day because the game runs like poo poo on my PC.
