2112 Combat Squadron: Mirage F-1

The Mirage F1 was nearly too good for its time. Fast, agile, sleek, fast, dangerous, and fast. It has a long career in more theaters than can be enumerated in one post. The F1 is an all-weather strike fighter interceptor that is (one of?) the only planes to shoot down F-14 Tomcats.

A modernized F1 was in the running against the F-16 Fighting Falcon to be the NATO fighter, but we all know how contract rigging goes.

quote:

Based on interviews, books and diaries of the participants, the first huge blow to the Iranian F-14 fleet came on November 24th, 1981 when a pair of F-14 Tomcats were caught by surprise and shot down by Iraqi Mirages in one of the deadliest days for the F-14 fighter fleet. In a pincer attack with a MiG acting as a decoy, the two Mirages downed the two F-14s using hit and run tactics and R.530 medium-ranged missiles. As detailed in our interview with an Iranian Tomcat pilot these losses severely dented the morale of the F-14 force.

quote:

During the ending phase of Iran–Iraq War a mini war developed between the Iraqi Mirage F1 EQ-5/6 units and the Iranian F-14s between February until July 1988. The F1 pilots hunted the Tomcats aggressively and attacked the Iranians at any occasion. The F1EQ-6s were equipped with good ECM systems, and the Iraqi pilots could deny the F-14s from using their AIM-54 missiles. For example on 19th July 1988 four Mirages attacked two F-14s and downed both, suffering no losses.

For this campaign we will likely be using the Mirage F1EE. Likely missions include:
  • Intercept
  • Fighter Sweep
  • Escort
  • Offensive Counter Air
  • Air Interdiction
  • Strike

Weapons expected to be employed:
  • R.530 and Super 530F semi-active radar guided missiles
  • AIM-9JULI all-aspect heat seaking missiles
  • SNEB 68mm rockets with various warheads(up to 144 across four pods)
  • Durandal anti-runway penetration bombs
  • Dumb Bombs, both low and high drag
  • Laser Guided Bombs, if someone will lase for us

We will fly:
  • High and fast
  • Low and fast
  • Nap of the earth and fast
  • Medium and slow speeds depending on others

Please consider signing up to fly with the 2112 Combat Squadron.

The Mirage 2000 and Mig-29 are pretty fast, too.

If you’re on the fence about signing up for this just know that the A4 module and base game are completely free (you will need the map though $) and with just a joystick and cheap webcam airgoons can get you flying in an afternoon or two.

Startup and basic operations for the A4 are incredibly simple compared to much of DCS and there are also many helpful youtube guides.

The webcam is for head tracking software, not for a small star fox chat window.

Like this, but when you use it it doesn't show your face to anyone. Helps with situational awareness.

  • Can be a credible threat flying Soviet style GCI intercepts from the mountains, but I wouldn't trust the AI to effectively do that.

Su-25T

  • Soviet equivalent of A-10
  • A variety of precision and non-precision A2G weapons
  • The ability to fire anti-radiation missiles.

As much as I personally love the F-5, I feel that the Su-25T would be the better pick, as it can CAS far more effectively than the F-5 can CAP. To that end, I vote

If we don’t have local air superiority, those 25ts are going to be scrap before they get to deliver their weapons. Even with regular pilots in them, they will be able to tie up the enemy, and waste their time and resources before they get to our squadrons. As a bonus, they can be used to deliver bombs and rockets if they’re not needed in their primary role.

I recommend Resolution Jaguar to give our strikers more cover, and give us defence in depth.

Maybe these AI Su-25T could be tasked in a manner to not Leroy Jenkins, and return to a holding point or base if in danger. We don't have a great track record on this, so point taken.

Despite this, I still say Su-25T.

Good afternoon, gentlegoons. This is your flight lead, R. Angel Banderas C., son of acclaimed and blooded FAE pilot Raúl Banderas D., who also flew the Mirage F1. We have been asked to destroy a bridge to disrupt enemy troop movements. Expect friendly and hostile ground units near the target.

CAP may be stretched thin. In order to ensure success for other's tasks as well as our own, we need to be aware of and respond to hostile air.

Panther 2 (two-ship F-16) is tasked with destroying the other bridge to the south. Uzi 1&2 (four-ship F-5) is tasked with finding and destroying supply convoy(s). Competence is unquestioned, however no plan survives contact with the enemy. Be prepared to coordinate with these flights to spot/respond to threats and deploy extra ordnance.

Fairly good positioning. Overextension would have put us in range of optically guided surface to air missiles.

Manually aimed weapons are tough enough to get on target without being shot at, yet we were able to succeed.

Communication seemed sufficient. No one got lost. No one was a liability.

Room for improvement: I should have called out to the ABM the helicopter I saw on egress, might have been able to tag it with a S530F.

Question to Command

In light of the new intelligence, are there any changes in tasking?

Please see the image below, only pay attention to the pink, green, and orange overlayed threat rings. Panther's objective is near the edge of the threat ring, Venom Target 1 is near the edge too and Target 2 is deep in it. Springfield could potentially skim the water and tag the runways at Target 2, but would be in a bad place if both ships move closer, and Pontiac TARCAP will have limited room to maneuver.

Good afternoon, gentlegoons. This is your flight lead, R. Angel Banderas C., son of acclaimed and blooded FAE pilot Raúl Banderas D., who also flew the Mirage F1. We have been tasked with Offensive CounterAir to hit the runways at Aerodrome Almirante Schroeders. Expect hostile SAMs and AAA, possibly fighter response.

Venom flight (four-ship Fighting Falcon) is tasked with SEAD/DEAD. They should be able to also provide some cover against enemy fighters.

Flight Plan
To Waypoint 1 - Fly at 2000ft
To Waypoint 2 - Fly at 50ft w/ altitude hold. Be mindful of barometric altimeter inaccuracies due to speed and AoA. Altitude hold will dip you into the drink if you approach transonic speeds, as it reverts to rudimentary operation in this regime. Stay ~3nm off the coast to avoid possible air defenses. Expect the FF - Type 054A to launch at you; lazy s-turns via autopilot should be enough to defeat these missiles.
To Waypoint 3 - Do not approach immediately. Crossing of runways. Venom flight will do their best to clear HQ-7 short range Radar and Optical missile systems. Rally to the northeast. Use offset feature to set an approach point, then switch back to sans-offset and correct course visually for attack run.

In-Flight Alignment only if necessary

Target
As previously stated, Venom will do their best but some defenders may remain. Bait/Recon for remaining defenders via the yellow approach; try to avoid head-on, turn off between 4~5nm from Waypoint 3, do not use countermeasures. The runs will likely cause the FF to fire as well. Keep cool.

Once satisfied that the target is unable to engage with HQ-7, take turns striking the runways. Keep speed up. Wiggle flight path to juke AAA if present. Drop flares to protect against manpads. Smoothly break away to the east to avoid the FF and DD in the area.

Egress the reverse route.

After Action Report

Short summary - The entire theater went rear end over tea kettle. Our SEAD/DEAD buddies ended up on CAP. Springfield 1-1 on SEAD. Springfield 1-2 and 1-3 proceeded as briefed with one minor deviation leading to 1-3 performing bonus SEAD work and not returning home.

RIP, R. Bolivar Banderas C., I'm proud of your accomplishments following in father's footsteps. I will avenge you!

Debrief continues below... As an aside, ingress was exciting. Join us in the Mirage F1!
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachme...eaf963933106ad&

Task
Destroy both runways. Partial success. Two transport planes destroyed, along with some HQ-7 systems, and a building at the airport. Unclear if these simulated craters represent actual damage.

What Went Well
Performed an orbit to give SEAD/DEAD time to do work instead of YOLOing it.
Jammers carried by Springfield 1-2 and 1-3 appear to have spoiled at least one R-3R launched by a J-7.
Baiting/Checking for remaining SAM/AAA threats before running in caused the HQ-7 sites to expend 8 missiles on Springfield 1-1 without effect.
Attack runs performed by all members, with pre-flaring, completed without getting shot down.

What Went Poorly
YOLO'ed it after SEAD/DEAD was retasked to CAP, nearly lost a member to an R-3R launched by a J-7.
Wind compensation could have been practiced more with sufficient weather briefing.
Assumed everyone was oriented for briefed egress of reverse waypoints, did not notice Springfield 1-3 departing from plan until they took missile hit over known enemy airfield.

Upon CHARLIE:
1/ fly 6~8nm southwest of target area
2/ confirm target locations
3/ first member attacks artillery position into the wind, rockets first, reset for bomb attack
3.1/ BDA, second member hits artillery position with rockets, or if the artillery is wiped target the infantry

Sample profile of rocket attack:
20kft, 360~400kias, roll into the dive around 3 miles, wings indicator about 45, targets about 50 degrees on the ladder, fire all your rockets between 15kft and 11kft. This kind of ~45 degree dive attack has the rockets drop about 5 degrees down the ladder from where the wings indicator is.

Sample profile of bomb attack:
15kft, 380kias, wings indicator about 35, targets about 44 degrees on the ladder, manually ripple between 5700 and 4700ft, pull out and dont forget to flare. Purple dot is where the first bomb actually hit.

Solidly in the zone where LGBs will struggle to stay on target (still fine for area targets, but less reliable vs a point vehicle)

Vähä always fucks with windspeed, so you practice with 23kts ground (which DCS forces a 90kt wind at 1200ft) and then find the mission wind to be 7kts.

We are currently a three-ship, if this mission interests you please speak up.

***expired links to squadron ensignia and cool pilot portrait***

Good afternoon, gentlegoons. This is your flight lead, R. Carlos Banderas C., son of acclaimed and blooded FAE pilot Raúl Banderas D., who also flew the Mirage F1.

Waypoints subject to whims of mission maker. Remember to reconfirm on the cockpit before takeoff or during cruise. It is a long cruise so we will have time to review coordinates. Gonna have to play it by ear, may land at SCNT to get a sip of fuel, or hit up the tankers if they are in a fortuitous place along their racetrack route. Don't sweat it if you don't feel up for aeriel refueling. Seriously no pressure.

Upon OLE:
Bomb targets of opportunity in the viscinity of the FORD operations.

Upon ALPACA:
Return to DIEGO

Upon GUINEA PIG:
RTB

Alternate Runways & AAR Options
Puerto Natales SCNT 26X
Rio Turbino SAWT also 26X
El Calafate SAWC 87X
Texaco 241MHz 13X
Arco 242MHz 52X

Good afternoon, gentlegoons. This is your recently promoted flight lead, R. Dario Banderas C., son of acclaimed and blooded FAE pilot Raúl Banderas D., who also flew the Mirage F1.

My brother's remains were recently repatriated during a POW exchange. Carlos Mirage was shot down during operations on 21 MAR, but he ejected near hostile Chinese forces. His body showed signs of severe blunt force trauma, almost certainly from beatings. They taunt my family by leaving these metal torture utensiles embeded in him. They must pay.

US DOD update:

After multiple contract disputes and "refinement" of the fielding timeline, the subcontractor refurbishing old QF-4s into F-4Es ready to be re-combat coded into the arsenal say that they should be ready to go in two weeks. If it's not ready this time, the US vows it won't get fooled again.

In the meantime, the pilots sent to the states to train up on QF-4s have been at Holloman Air Force Base for months now, and they've probably hiked every inch of Cloudcroft has to offer.

What's the snow coverage like in Feb/Mar?
