Today I was reminded of the time Matthew McConaughey fought a dragon with a battle axe.

Matthew McConaughey is so good in it. Van Zan is the best part of the movie entirely because he's played so utterly straight that you actually start to believe in him despite how insane he is.

The dragon fucks, cannibalizes smaller dragons and they can apparently subsist on eating ash when there aren't other dragons around to eat.

Charles Ford posted:Also I saw Reign of Fire once, during its run in the cinema and absolutely hated it, though I have no recollection why. I do recall a bit about dragons spitting nitro-napalm though, implying napalm was a dragon invention. I don't remember Matthew McConaughey (or Alexander Siddig?) even being in it, only Christian Bale. McConaughey shaved his head for the movie so he doesn't look like his usual self. I think Siddig was a radio operator or something, it was a bit part. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6ZyFfCYm_8 Apparently it's on Disney Plus so I think I'll watch it today to see how well my recollection holds up apart from psycho man with axe vs Dragon. Honestly even when I was young I mainly thought the movie was decent but not great. Nowadays though there's such a lack of good films that even an average movie from 20 years ago looks like a masterpiece by comparison. So yeah, on the rewatch Reign of Fire still sits in that "good but not great" category of movies. The CGI for the dragons actually holds up really well and the sets for the castle and the ruins of London are great. Almost everyone is putting in good performances though it really is a showdown between Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey to see who can play the man closest to having a nervous breakdown. But it does feel like two thirds of one film with a second much sillier film bolted on for the third act. The first two thirds of the film are incredibly grim before getting downright depressing. Then the third act where they go to London happens and Quinn and Van Zan are making action movie quips, there's jokes about Van Zan's bourbon flask being full of water, the amazing scene with the battle axe vs dragons and it ends with the most 2000s as gently caress buttrock credits music. Also got some major whiplash seeing Doug Cockle in the movie and hearing hints of his Witcher voice. I feel like this would be a good movie to do a double feature with the film Doomsday. Just get some B movie shenanigans across Britain with a mix of apocalypse and medieval styles. Arc Hammer fucked around with this message at 21:08 on Jan 3, 2024 |

Well I just got back from the Canadian premiere of Tommy Weisau's new film Big Shark, and Greg Sestero was there to introduce the movie and do a bit of Q&A. It's not as earnestly funny as The Room because Tommy was certainly leaning into this one being a comedy. But at the same time he's still an insane alien disguised as a Polish expat living in America and that shines through in several spots. The best character was his cowboy buddy Tim. That actor was clearly having a blast. It was like watching a trio of alcoholics battle a big Shark that only killed people on land. You have Tim the functional alcoholic who gets increasingly deranged as the movie goes on, Georgie the depressed alcoholic who can't hold his liquor, and Tommy playing a psychopath who has manic mood swings between attempts to get his coworkers killed. Definitely worth watching with a few beers and friends but it can't quite capture the magic of The Room. Greg seemed like a really nice guy.

Where Kojima desperately wanted to make Hollywood movies and instead built unique videogames to carve out his own niche, Druckmann desperately wanted to make a Hollywood movie so he made a movie but with the most lame cookie cutter videogame stapled on. And nobody cares about him. I mean the show is fine and I'd even say some parts of it are quite good, but between Druckmann believing his own hype and Craig Mazin gassing the show up as the most important thing to ever be filmed, it still suffers under the same umbrella of insecurity that hits every video game movie/show production that is desperate for the film industry's approval. It also doesn't help that every time the show tries to do a 1:1 remake of a scene from the game it comes off worse in every regard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YutXfsbTrtA Season 2 is going to have an uphill battle considering its subject matter and current events.
