Harbaugh wasn't fired either. He had beef with the front office, and they struggled for power, so he just left for Michigan. Him going to college was the big shock, because he easily could have stayed in the NFL.

I think the mistake was rolling forward into full on professional sports and not trying to rollback into amateurism (obviously with improvements to the student side of things like aforementioned transfer rules and such).
