From Sinema's last financial disclosure she has less than $100k of assets and is still paying off student loans. It seems more likely that she had a galaxy brained plan to become president than that this is all a strategy to get as rich as possible which is going perfectly.

That’s the closest I can come up with for a rationale. I don’t like assuming people I disagree with are just stupid, but it’s really hard to do that when they keep getting stymied by simple causality.

Nobody really campaigned against the ballot measure and I don't think anyone will be very sympathetic to politicians saying having to do their jobs is unfair. I guess they might not care about running for reelection.

None of these are Trump's important weaknesses in a general election. Those are that he got abortion banned and did January 6. He is going to be bragging about both of those during the campaign and on very high profile trial for one.

Because Biden is clearly not actually senile so there is no reason to remove him from office, and Democratic voters want Biden as the nominee.

It's not exactly shy Biden voters. The thing is you see a lot of people online talking about protest voting because Democrats aren't far enough left (or, on other sites, because Republicans aren't far enough right), but evidence doesn't support that happening enough to matter. In 2016 and 2020 there was a lot of talk about Sanders voters not turning out for the nominee because they wanted a socialist, but they turned out at very high rates.

Actual protest voters are usually protesting because Democrats are too far left (or Republicans are too far right) and most of them just vote for the other party.

it was my understanding that the point of voting third party is to show there are substantial numbers of voters who care deeply enough to throw their vote away, so the results of

Genocide Joe 2,100,000
Genocide Don 2,080,000
Peace Party Cand 21,000

might make the losing party adopt some of the third party's positions. apologies if thus is stupid or wrong, I don't have a degree in poli-sci

We wouldn't know why they voted third party. The people voting for the green party aren't necessarily doing so because they're upset that the Democrat isn't socialist enough. They could also be protest voting because the Democrat isn't moderate enough, or protest voting against the Republican, or they could be dedicated green party voters.

That's also why third parties aren't usually spoilers. Clinton lost Wisconsin by 23,000 votes and Jill Stein got 31,000, but if Stein hadn't been on the ballot enough of those voters would have skipped or voted for Trump that he'd still have won.

What we do know is that protest voting because Democrats aren't left enough (or Republicans aren't right enough) is rare.

If you're mostly deciding based on genocide, another thing to consider is that Republicans support the genocide Russia is carrying out in Ukraine and have policy plans to aid it, while Democrats oppose it and have policy plans to prevent it. That isn't hypothetical either, we know because Republicans won the house in 2022 and implemented their plans to aid Russia's genocide of Ukrainians.

Not sure if I would use her wording but that race was insane. Schiff got so much money poured into him that he spent more on promoting Garvey than Garvey spent on himself.

For a party that claims that democracy is at stake, it's bizarre that one of the most prominent Dems is receiving funding from Democrats to spend on promoting a Republican.

There was a reasonable opportunity to make this race into a 2-Dem race and guarantee the seat in November but Schiff, Pelosi and crew apparently think the small chance of a Republican winning the race is much better than having Porter on the ballot.

A Schiff vs Porter race and a Schiff vs Garvey race are equally likely to be won by a Democrat (and Schiff and Porter would have the same voting record in the senate), but the Schiff vs Porter race would take in massive amounts of actblue donations that would otherwise go to more competitive states.

edit: I'm also unsure you can blame Schiff for this when Porter spent 20 million dollars and finished 19 points behind Garvey, who spent 1 million.

I don't know about that. Bernie Sanders obviously wasn't going after Biden's age, since he's older and had a heart attack during his campaign. If I remember right the age issue was mostly Buttigieg's thing. It's also hard to call it effective when Biden easily won the primary (unless your idea is that Sanders would have won if he had attacked Biden's age, even though it didn't work for Buttigieg?) I don't recall the left in congress criticizing Biden's age at all, either.

I assumed when you said "the left" you meant something that matters like actual politicians running for office to Biden's left, rather than some article in a magazine with a circulation of 75,000.

If you live in California, sure. If you vote in the right swing state, your probability of casting a pivotal vote is around 1 in 10 million. That paper is old so maybe now it might be between 1 in a million and 1 in 100 million. That's small but not so small that people don't make decisions in pursuit of it. If you buy a Powerball/Mega Millions ticket, the odds of getting the jackpot are about 1 in 300 million. And these tickets sell very well, but my homemade "zero probability of winning" lottery tickets sell very poorly! The difference between zero and non-zero.

Hard to visualize the most likely scenario where Jill Stein wins an election - maybe if Trump and Biden are both caught, on camera, committing heinous crimes? Probably not even then.

And a low probability of your vote deciding the election doesn't make it worthless, because the impact is large. Biden winning in 2020 caused trillions of dollars of government spending, but to make the arithmetic easier it meant that about half the country got $2000 worth of stimulus checks. That's 330 billion dollars, so even if your vote had a 1 in 100 million chance of swinging the election it'd be worth $3300 in stimulus checks alone (assuming you care about other people getting aid).

And I have seen here and elsewhere people blurring the line because they're nervous any discussion of Biden's age automatically makes it the former.

I don't think saying Biden is old is controversial, people are getting pushback for "Biden has dementia based on this 15 second video clip and being old" (obviously false) or "Biden will lose because he's old" (debatable since we won't even know who won until November)
