It is spring (by the meteorological calendar), so I'm freshening up the OP with a new thing where I post from some book I'm reading contains something unexpectedly relevant to current events, so here's one from Folk devils and moral panics by Stanley Cohen, where he discusses the tipping point where a simple moral panic (which may come from something genuinely terrible, like the murder of Jamie Bulger, but goes in a stupid direction, like mass blaming of horror VHS tapes) and outright group hatred (which is what starts pogroms). The part where he draws the line is a good look at the 00s prequal to SMOL BOTES and ends up slamming both major parties and every British paper repeatedly. The First Botes posted:In tabloid rhetoric, especially the Daily Mail (whose campaign of vilification is too deliberate and ugly to be seen as a mere moral panic), the few nuances in these assumptions disappear: I'm getting a vivid vision of the near future. 🐇 In Other News • Thames Water is lobbying government to let it increase bills by 40% in order to continue paying investor dividends while sinking into further debt • Helen Joyce read a violent pornfic about underaged Harry Potter characters on the train in public for Pete Townsend purposes • A serial scammer who set up a fake foodbank used AI to generate the worst possible Willy Wonka experience in Glasgow • Lee Anderson does a racism, then follows it up with being suspended, trying to join Reform, then writing a thousand word "I'm not racist, but" • Liz Truss goes to America to play at being Q • Andrew Bridgen posts some NWO/Protocols of Zion bullshit • Prince William unexpectedly pulls out • The Trident nuclear missile system suffers projectile dysfunction • The Luftwaffe bombed Keynam, Plymouth • The UK quits the Energy Charter Treaty, which had allowed fossil fuel companies to sue governments over profits lost in the drive towards net zero • Six new London Overground lines are named as Lioness, Mildmay, Windrush, Weaver, Suffragette and Liberty • Opposition day House of Commons debate calling for a ceasefire in Gaza descends into chaos with Lindsay Hoyle 🐤 Put Your Records On UKMT Winterval 2023/24 - Zero-Tolerance Zones in Hotpot Areas UKMT Autumn 2023 - Things have got worse. From a midday phone chat with my da: "The man's an unpleasant testicle, but he was right about Iraq and better than anyone else running." Imagine, if you will, a whole by election of candidates who make George Galloway look like the good option. 4 is the number of indecent images Simon Danczuk sent to a 17 year old intern.

It was a whole election of bigoted conspiracy theorists and sex perverts, and people backed the one who was right once and wears a hat. It's nothing for anyone to be proud of, but the people who should be most ashamed are those who couldn't find anyone better than George to stand.

ThomasPaine posted:Galloway is a baffling politician to me. Like maybe 60% his takes are actually very on point, but the remainder are absolute horseshit. He seems generally alright on foreign policy and economics but dear god he can be pretty reactionary socially and the gleeful transphobia is grim. I don't know how much of this is actually what he genuinely believes and how much is him actively playing to religious conservatives in his constituency, but I guess that's besides the point. I do think he's a narcissist, and he's clearly primarily interested in George Galloway first and foremost.

New conspiracy theory, queens's not dead, she just phased invisible into the UV part of the spectrum so we can't see her. Whenever Charles thinks he's sitting on one of the monarch chairs he's actually sitting on the queen, who is now oscillating around soft X-ray frequency. This is what caused his arse cancer.
