Union chat - the flowchart is this: Union your job recognises > Union with the most members at your job > if all similar-ish, union with the best local branch.

Local branches can vary wildly by job/location and unfortunately there's no way to know before you join them and have to deal with them. The branches should have meetings every now and then where you can go and gauge what they're like. Don't be afraid to quit and join another one if you're really disappointed by them! As long as you don't have any ongoing issues at work (since unions will not represent you on issues that started before you joined them, otherwise everyone would just join last minute), it should be fine.

Unite are probably the best of the big three (unite, unison, gmb) on a national politics level and anecdotally, my branch are quite good, but as I said it varies pretty drastically.

My office only digitised during COVID. Oh sure people had computers and emailed, but files were printed out, work was written on a board and then ticked off by people when it was picked up, filing cabinets for old work, giant calendar for people to write their appointments in, etc. I tried to get them to do more stuff digitally, but the youngest person in the office was in their 50s and none of them were having it. I once had to explain to someone the difference between a single and a double click with their computer mouse.

The job manual I got when I joined was a big binder that detailed helpful things such as how to mail merge and then instructing you to print out the merged file and file it away in the proper filing cabinet. Saving it on the computer just Wasn't Done.

The staff were all also very uninterested in learning. I set up systems to make everything quicker and less analog, but nobody could be bothered to learn how to log in to their outlook365 account until they absolutely had to. Theres a shared digital calendar that most people refuse to use.

They're also still working on digitising out actual, physical archives full of box of paper but I suspect that's just to save on storage costs. All the boxes just sit in a disused office instead now.

We're now mostly digital, but the systems in place for it are mostly hodge podge nonsense I put together and our new filing cabinet is just me saving files on my computer and emailing them out to people when requested. Still better than paper. I'm glad we don't have any of the specialised machines, though there is a letter stuffer machine and a dusty fax somewhere in the mail room.

This came on after the initial "he never wears a tie!!!" hysteria when Corbyn first got made LOTO. It didn't last long since he started wearing a tie, I assume at the urging of some pr team. Afaik he basically never wore a tie until shortly after becoming LOTO if he could help it.

They're literally destabilising the west legally at this point and it's obvious to anyone. Have we fallen into the loving twilight zone or something?

I haven't read this resolution, but if the US proposed it I assume it's not a ceasefire bill, but a way to send Israel more weapons or something.

For what it's worth, my main objection is to "all the Israelis should go back where they came" stuff. My preferred solution is one state with equal rights and separation from church and state.

States having a right to exist is a very murky concept which isn't worth discussing imo, because states can't have rights - they're not people. At that level of operation it's about what you can get away with, and what other states/your population will punish you for or not.

Israeli politics is very complicated in a lot of ways. Demonstrations usually have multiple factions that want different things in them.

Suffice to say that while most Israelis aren't far gone enough to rock up with popcorn to the bombings, the vast majority of Israelis are very, very right wing on most issues.

Very funny to me that dark academia is a fashion trend nowadays and not just a sub genre of fantasy books.

I think probably whoever said that we're just disconnected from young people's trends because we basically live on parallel planes of existences wet media consumption is right. A friend told me yesterday that he had to use urban dictionary to understand what some kids were saying (I believe the word that tripped him up was gyatt). In the past, the uncool adults wouldn't like the way we spoke, but they at least knew what it meant. Maybe that's just because neither of us have teenagers yet.

In my experience, and everyone I've talked to, there's no conveyancing solicitors that aren't slower than an elephant walking through a tar pit. I had a friend in the soliciters firm that handled my sale who I could nudge to go yell at our solicitor and it still took a while, they vanished occasionally, and once the sale was done basically evaporated.

Oh yeah 100%, it's just crazy how many people seem to buy it. It's more expensive for the country than a well planned publicly run service would be. Like, it fails, and nakedly so, unless you out and out claim the goal is to funnel public money to capitalists. It's grim how this is constantly framed as a 'debate' when there is absolutely no ambiguity that it is poo poo and everyone bar the people profiting think so. But the answer is apparently more of the same will make things better? How long have they been saying that, and it never is.

Speaking of which how is Argentina doing under the AnCap king?

It's so ridiculous as well. Even under the most basic analysis and no effort from the government, it doesn't stand up to any argument other than 'uuhhh government bad private business good??'

Like, if the government buys out a company running a business, they can keep the entire structure as-is, make zero changes so nothing will get worse, the same people will be making the decisions, but there's no need to pay shareholders. Even in that very pared down case, it'll be cheaper and run the same.

The jail time varies by quite a lot of variables, but as others stated there's also a lot of societal issues with getting jobs down the line (and while legally jobs aren't allowed to ask you what you did in the army or if you served, applying for jobs at 20 would raise some eyebrows for example). There's jobs like security work etc that require a military service.

I'm pretty sure I would have also lost my entire social circle if I didn't join up. In hindsight that would have been a good thing, but at the time it's pretty daunting.

His Divine Shadow posted:

Guess it affects people differently. I was conscripted and it basically rescued my physical and mental health. It probably helps we're purely defensive and not engaged in a war of conquest.

In Finland you can select civil service instead of military service though.

I suspect the Finnish and Israeli army are quite different, yeah.

On the conscription thing, even if you think every Ukrainian should be fighting the Russians, surely that's a decision for them to make individually? If a Ukrainian lad decides he doesn't want to, he should be allowed to leave? Which conscription doesn't really allow for. And like Owly said, if you're for conscription, because the threat is that big, why aren't you over there fighting?

Conscription is bollocks and everyone should be able to choose for themselves if they want to fight to the death. Aiming a gun at another human being is just as scary as them aiming one at you.
