I still can't get over the idea that the Kraft Brain Trust decided the only problem with the team was the greatest coach ever and they didn't need to bring in any outside voices to coach or GM.

If they had drafted and coached better the Pats would probably still be stuck running Mac back another season.

Maybe if Scar was in the building I would have more faith in their ability to transition a developmental player to LT. The current staff needs to prove it.

I swear to god I read a story that the Falcons wanted the Mr Irrelevant pick in a possible trade and the the Jets refused. Cannot find the story now.

Edit: I remembered wrong. The Broncos tried to get that pick as part of the ZW deal.

The hierarchy of the Patriots front office is about to change.

According to a source, the Patriots have begun the process of searching for their next general manager or top front office executive. It’s unknown if the next person tabbed to lead the team’s front office will have the GM title, but the conclusion of this process will result in an individual having the power to run the Patriots personnel department.

The logic FWIW is that Bill constantly blew off the advice of his own scouts and front office guys to take giga-trash players for 5 years in a row or something.

~Allegedly~

I think there is probably plenty of truth to this. Belichick loved to draft guys that his college friends recommended. He also put a premium on drafting guys that were "versatile" and could play on special teams, but too often this was at the expense of the actual position they were supposed to play and actually sucked at. He was more interested in players that exhibited his brand of football IQ, guys who would fall in line and not ask questions - he'd draft randos from small schools because they seemed more like the round peg that would fit rather than any of the more accomplished athletic choices available.

That being said, I'm skeptical that the Patriot's scouting department was recommending him five All Pro's every year to draft.

I mean, the picks might suck but it's definitely different from late career Bill.

Two bad at least two of those picks were reaches.

The reality is, they needed a franchise QB, a WR1 and a starting LT. There is almost no way to get all that in one draft without setting future day one draft picks on fire.

Drafting Wilson was at least sound from a process perspective. He was a fairly clean prospect and a consensus no brainer for the Jets at #2.

The Rodgers trade was way more suspect. Extremely risky move to trade for a then nearly-40 year old QB coming off his worst career year and hiring his dopey pal as OC.

To be fair they didn't have to hire Hackett as part of the trade. The Jets did that all on their own before they even got Rogers lol.

If you don't think Tua is the guy, then don't sign him. There's no, oh we only paid him $45m per, it's a great deal, that's Daniel Jones logic.

Let him play it out. If he has a good year and shows he's worth a contract, who cares if it's $8m more per if he actually is the guy.

If he isn't the guy, then you're basically hoping you can draft and build a perfect team to maybe pray your way through the playoffs. Super low odds regardless. Might as well trust in your coaching to go find his Brock Purdy.

The thing I don't understand is why the Dolphins don't already know if he's their guy or not. They should loving know by now.

I think unfortunately NFL QBs missing games is just par for the course now. The ironmen QBs are a thing of the past despite the NFL's efforts to protect the position. There are just too many games and the balance of power between passrushers and offensive linemen has become too unbalanced.

Gully Foyle posted:

Not saying missing time isn't normal, but there's plenty of QBs proving the exception. Allen has started pretty much every game (after the rookie year). Mahomes hasn't started less than 16 games a season since being a starter. Goff missed like 3 games in 2021, but other than that has played pretty much every game with both the Rams and Lions. Russel Wilson missed 2-3 games per year with the Broncos, but started every game under the Seahawks.

That's only four QB's out of 32 - more really because you're looking over multiple years. They are literally the exception. And even for those exceptions there were exceptions.

The seasons are longer, the protection is weak and the game is still dangerous.
