I'm thinking of holding off on my vice admiral ship till I see what they are doing with this delta release. So far, I still like science ships, though I imagine one day, I'll respec to do escorts and GO FAST FIRE LOTS. etc.

If it helps, it was implied it would be a semi-regular reward for the streams in the future, which is why it was character-specific rather than an account unlock.

We've probably seen all the ships we're going to get at the expansion launch now if that helps any, though I can't rule out another surprise addition. If you want to try out different ship types before then the mirror variants are good and cheap, although you won't be able to upgrade those later.

We don't know how much it will cost to upgrade ships, but it will probably cost zen. As for upgrading equipment, yeah that'll cost you a bunch. And forget about upgrading to epic quality anytime soon.

Will running missions with scaling reward items that currently cap out at Mk XI drop Mk XII or XIII gear at 60?

Like 80% of the playerbase has a Federation main, so it's not really a surprise.

Yeah, Cryptic's stated it will definitely be a zen thing, but they haven't given a price yet (I'm expecting 550x or so but would be depressed an unsurprised if it hit at 1000z) or said whether it will be a token you can sell like fleet modules or a direct purchase. The current interface on Tribble implies the latter though.

Old missions seem to cap out at whatever they did before, new missions give MkXII so far, though there might be a pass on the rewards before it's live.

Yeah, but max level in the old system was XII and scaling stopped at XI. So there's a chance they'll take us to XIII and we'll just have to upgrade to max them out to XIV.

Here's hoping. Though if so I just wasted my time getting a whole bunch of Mk XI Dominion Pinkbeams and Caustic Plasma. And Babylon 5 PPG effect gun.

Though I'm currently tossing up between the PPG wavey-FX-gun, the Ghostbusters gun, or the always-vapourise-on-kill blue TOS phaser pistol.

I got 99 problems but the British ain't one.
XII to XIV is fine, it's upgrading the quality of the item that's going to be a bitch. That said, yeah, you aren't going to need Mk XIV gear to handle the new content. We can breeze through most STFs in undergeared fresh level 50s and still get optionals, we'll be able to handle the new content with properly geared characters.

Remember, cryptic has to balance this poo poo around the people who are running beams cannons torps and sometimes mines.

You know, that's got me wondering- how well would a beam escort work? I'm thinking quick hit and run broadsides, with the goal being to hang around at the edges of the battlefield, expend all your buffs, then quickly run out. Right now, my cannon/torp escort tactics consist of:

1: Point ship at enemy
2: FOR THE GLORY OF THE IMPERIUM FEDERATION, CHARGE!
3: FIRE EVERYTHING!
4: See who dies first

I don't know, I think a little variation would be interesting, not to mention I can use that 360-degree antiproton beam with a clear conscience.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

Yeah, the only real issue with the quality upgrades is that Cryptic basically massively obfuscated the actual costs so it seems less painful than it actually is. You're basically buying the item all over again (it's like 10k-30k dil depending on the item type and whether it's improved or superior upgrade items), but that's manageable enough. Just consider a quality upgrade as a nice surprise if it happens while doing mark upgrades, and don't worry about it otherwise.

As an aside, if an item is already ultra rare (which is mostly just fleet gear right now), don't bother upgrading it until Delta Rising hits. Stuff can't reach Epic/orange until after the expansion, so you waste a 5% shot at a quality upgrade.

It can work pretty well, though in a lot of cases it's a waste of effort. Most escorts have too many tac power slots so you wind up having one or more wasted, although it's fun to zip around. A beam escort is mostly useful on ships where you have a universal you can put somewhere else since you really only need a commander tac (like on the Nicor or JHEC), or it's a ship that's so fast you don't really want to bother pointing it at an enemy (pretty much just the Corvette right now).

Usually if you want to do a "beamscort" you're better off just grabbing a fast nimble cruiser like an Avenger or Galor though.

This sounds like the perfect job for the JHEC. It has the layout and numbers for it like Asimo said, plus it has that one Dominion console that's basically a 3-minutes clicky Attack Pattern and a Hangar Bay to harass with whatever you like.

Also, it's purple.

Pretty much just Fire at Will really. Beam Overload's been buffed a bit so it doesn't drain weapon power, but it's still a brief burst while FAW boosts every shot for the duration and is AOE. Beam overload can still be fun in PVE, but it's better suited for throwing a single DBB on an escort, adding a few of those "chance to ignore enemy shields after a BO" doffs, and using it instead of a torpedo.

Fire at Will, got it. What's a DBB, though? And should I invest in any of the 'Target [System]' skills? I'm thinking targeting shields or weapons, but I have no idea how those skills actually work.

Bloodly
Nov 3, 2008

Not as strong as you'd expect.
DBB=Dual Beam Bank. Beam weapon with more damage but a 90 degree firing arc. The main reason no one uses them aside from certain things is you can't get everything firing at a target; you can't combine firing arcs as you can with Cannon+Turrets or all Beam Arrays.

Target 'X': drains power from the subsystem in question, with a chance to put the system completely offline. This is why Science ships get rank 1 versions of all four inherently, tending to specialise in power drain and fuckery. They're so-so, but share cooldown with the other beam modifiers, I think.

Bloodly fucked around with this message at 09:43 on Sep 29, 2014

Dual beam banks would be a lot more useful if there were "beam turrets". The omni-directional beams from crafting are unique, which ruins this options. :argh:

And yeah, the "Target <subsystem>" skills would be more useful for PVE if they didn't share a cooldown with the damage abilities. As it is, you're better off with just fire at wll.

For the record, you can have multiple copies of a single skill, either different ranks on the same bridge officer or the same ranks on different ones. :v: This isn't always useful since most powers share a cooldown, but the beam skills I think have a 15s shared cooldown with a 30s individual cooldown, so you can use two just fine. Either two of the same or one of each.

The <X> Team skills work similarly, although their shared cooldown is per type and not across all the Team skills these days. Emergency Power engineering skills are another good one to double up on, since there's a 15s shared cooldown but the individual powers last 30 seconds and have a 45s individual cooldown. Which means if you have enough engineering slots you can potentially keep two different variants up constantly if you have two copies of each and rotate between the types. (Like EPTS #1 > EPTW #1 > EPTS #2 > EPTW #1 > start over with EPTS #1).

Cutting beam is basically a turret, so just leave it in back and keep the torpedo. Could swap the torpedo for a fourth cannon, but on a lot of escorts you'll have unfilled skill slots if you do this yeah. (Since at most you'd be able to 2x tac team, 2x cannon skills, 2x attack patterns, so the seventh slot would go idle.)
