Mallard Fillmore: Year Two (June 5-10, 1995) And with that, I posted the first year of the strip. I know I said that I was planning to keep posting these, but in hindsight, I don't know if there's anything more to post. If people want me to keep posting the strips, I might do that, but otherwise I'll probably just end it when this "charming" storyline.

I mean, where do they think a society consisting entirely of soldiers who have no other skill or duty gets things like food, weapons, homes, etc? Meanwhile the Persian Empire was pretty progressive for it's time and Cyrus the Great is even credited with writing the first human rights charter.

I mean, where do they think a society consisting entirely of soldiers who have no other skill or duty gets things like food, weapons, homes, etc? They weren't really cartoonishly evil. And Spartan society didn't just include soldiers; there were a number of classes who could not join the army including women and the aforementioned Helots who both had more rights and privileges than their counterparts in Athens. I know know we look back on the infanticide and ritual killings of Helots as cruel and mad, but it's ultimately just par for the course for a lot of ancient societies. People who fetishize them now ignore all that stuff as it detracts from a modern idea of what a noble soldier is.

A few pages ago, but: This one comes off as really racist. That AZ. policy in and of itself was derided for being able to be abused for racial profiling, but WTF? If you pulled over the driver for speeding, its "License and Registration" to the driver, not to the passanger. Also, using "Your papers please"? You made a reference to Casablanca, but also to the police force, who were corrupt and controlled by the nazis. Good job Rob Smith Jr. Well, at least he got the blue necktie in there.

Reading these early strips, it was pretty obvious that Tinsley (and maybe conservatives in general) were big on the idea that with the Republican Revolution having happened, that Clinton was doomed and probably wouldn't even run for reelection. I'd really like to see the strips from after the '96 election to see how he dealt with that.
