I am really impressed with the times that thing has been putting down. Especially if it's doing it on the stock treaded street tires (kuhmo v720). For reference it's faster than a lot of purpose built time attack cars that have more tire, more power, and less weight. The best we ever did at big willow was 1:23.1 and for a long time that was the fastest anyone had gone without slicks. Viper cranked out a 1:21 with time left on the table,. jamal fucked around with this message at 01:31 on Nov 5, 2015 |

Pfft I get corner speeds like that all the time in Forza. These guys ain't nothing. The fact that I suffer no injuries or penalties for wrecking in a video game has no bearing on this.

Bike build quality is hilariously better than car build quality pretty much across the board (with a few notable exceptions) and Yamaha are near the top. That concept gives me the impression that they don't realise how difficult it is to build a car that isn't poo poo whilst still jumping through all the legislative hoops and making the cost palatable to enough people that they buy the car. It's much 'cheaper' to build a high quality bike from a development standpoint than a high quality car.

I dunno, I pretty much only ride Yamahas (old Yamahas at that), and I have a ton of respect for their instruments (especially their pianos and saxes), but I probably wouldn't buy a car from them. Edit: Slavvy put it better than I did.

Slap the motor from an R1 or, maybe an FJR1300, in that Yamacar and I'd drive the gently caress out of it.

If they build the car according to the specs I've seen floating around it would genuinely be the first new car in ages I'd be genuinely interested in. But you're right, it was designed by Gordon Murray. A man who's resume consists of making a no holds bar super car 20 years ago when regulations weren't remotely as stringent as they are today and warming over a Mercedes concept car as it transitioned to production. I don't have a lot of faith that the concept would be as pure when/if it reaches production.

You wouldn't enjoy sitting at 7,000rpm on the motorway or having no torque below 5 grand I don't think. Everyone faps about putting bike engines in cars but unless the car is super duper light and the bike engine very large and powerful (like busa into mini, for example), the results are less than stellar because bikes (even the really torquey ones) effectively have no torque at low revs; it's how they can have such insane specific power outputs without blowing up constantly. Even the most highly strung cars have to bow to being driveable in traffic with a boot full of luggage and a cabin full of passengers and doing that with a literbike engine isn't really the most enjoyable task even when you're on a vehicle that weighs a fraction of a car.

Gordon Murray also helped design this box with smooth edges used for transporting people around cities at like 30mph. EXCITING! I like the Yamaha's side profile, the actual design of the thing is ugly as poo poo though. That said, it's small, light and probably a lot of fun if they could get it to where they want it... I could be swayed.

All modern subcompact cars look like poo poo. I guess it's a combination of trying to squeeze some useful cargo space into a small footprint and still have to fulfill modern safety requirements that limits the design space. I have a shameful affection for the Smart Roadster though, because it looks like an overgrown hot wheels.

That's insane to watch I sort of thought that all the drag from the aero kit would slow the car down on straights, but at the end of the main straight he's going almost 10MPH faster than I was there, and I turned a 1:38. I'm going back the day after thanksgiving, so it'll be interesting to see how the car performs on fresh tires. Amazing the times it is putting down. It's sad that the Viper's sales didn't do better. If that thing was European it would sell for twice the MSRP and they wouldn't be able to make enough.

Word is from the FCA people at SEMA that the supposed Viper cancellation is just another clickbait rumor. Really, all they need to do to boost sales is bring back the roadster (supposedly long in development), offer an optional automatic (sacrilegious, I know), and switch to a rear exhaust (quieter cabin lol, no whining about burned legs, louder VROOM VROOM for parking lot/shopping strip revvers). Some tv ads couldn't hurt either.

If you're just posing with it which let's face it, it's a viper so you are, a $30,000 car has the same visual effect as a $85,000 car. It's a really awesome vehicle, and it's great that it's built, but i can't see FCA dumping a ton of money on development and safety testing and emission testing to double their monthly sales to 100. At this point they've probably just told 3 or 4 engineers to have fun with it as long as it's legal and then pack their bags for modeno. You Am I posted:It was probably an old test mule anyway it was a to-be-crushed press car, the engine is probably under a hood at sema right now.
