So Huckabee about that kill the gays quote:An unnamed reporter asked Huckabee, apparently directly after his speech to the conference, about “reports that there are a few pastors speaking her today that say that if you’re homosexual, you should be prosecuted, you should actually be killed.” “Obviously, I don’t agree with that,” Huckabee responded. “I don’t think anyone’s ever accused me of saying that. And I don’t know, did anyone say that from this stage today?” The reporter responded that while nobody had said such things from the stage yet that day, the organizer and other speakers had previously made such remarks. Right Wing Watch called up every candidate who was planning to go, Carson actually listened and didn't speak.

Pavlov posted:I'm still not entirely sure what the republican message is anymore once you've removed all the clearly insane bullshit. I mean to me, the old message was "less bread and circus, more business" with lip service to Reagans lazy Christians and all sorts of white malcontents. Now it's something like "business uber alles, no bread or circuses because your poorer neighbor might get a taste" and a confusingly hate and projection filled brand of Christianity that's more of a masochistic team exercise than anything else. As if the white malcontents decided "Christian" should have no discernible difference from white anxiety and everyone just shrugged. I really wish they would clean this mess up. Or, at the very least, engage with the reality of the electorate and stop blasting out offensive idiocy for funsies.

Oddly enough the base now hates BIG BUSINESS almost as much as Bernie supporters. Of course the far-right believes that big business exists because of BIG GOVERNMENT, and that Wall-Street is a Crony-capitalist/socialist/liberal hell pit. The far-right has really become fascist.

I saw that story and thought they ID'd the reporter as Jake Tapper. I'm loving riled by this thing. Even at my most cynical devils advocate I'm still thinking "you guys 100 percent signed off on the politics of association with bill ayers and rev wright. Saying this isnt fair doesnt matter anymore, its gonna happen and this is going to sink you" And in the real world I just want to puke that they can do this and a few days later stand on a national debate stage without even worrying about being asked about ENDORSING THE GOVT KILLING YOUR FELLOW CITIZENS BECAUSE THEYRE loving GAAAAAAAY.

I, for one, support Donald Trump on his crusade to bring an end to Ben Carson's candidacy through any means necessary. He's the only one of your candidates that actually scares me, speaking as a foreigner.

In other news, I also get the feeling that a hyperbolic slander against Carson isn't automatically going to sink Trump in the polls. Lots of Republicans near me seem to like that kind of thing because it means they aren't afraid to stand up for what they believe and thus the liberal agenda and yadda yadda.

Mitt Romney posted:I don't know about that. This seems like prime Trump. I wouldn't be surprised if his supporters like the aggressiveness. Nah. Like if Trump said "Jeb Bush looks like that Subway slob! Can you believe it!?!" People would love it. Unlike Jeb, Ben Carson is currently untouchable to the base. Talk radio will turn on him, and in turn so will the base. But I could be wrong... Trump could spin out of this somehow.

Carson is not alone in having a tax plan that would bankrupt the US and a foreign policy plan that would kick World War III into gear. Cruz's plan for America is pretty terrifying as well, but he's clearly awake when he's saying this poo poo.

Intel&Sebastian posted:I keep trying to view these things from the perspective of someone who wants a Republican president, but isn't an insane whackjob, and it's a nightmare. If it makes you feel any better, my mother - a lifelong Republican who spent her entire life teaching in inner schools even past her retirement where she volunteers to this day - is having some kind of existential crisis over this. She is very clearly bothered not only by what's happening with the Republican Party but that by calling herself a Republican she feels somewhat complicit. At the same time she keeps threatening to vote Democrat like its some huge fundamental change for her that she's having to talk herself into. I'm not encouraging it or discouraging it because (a) I don't want to be pushy about it, (b) she's clearly got a moral center that would get her where I'd want to push her anyway, and (c) we live in NY so it really and truly doesn't matter. The other life long Republican in my close family circle isn't budging and is largely in denial about the insanity, but she's also drinking enough that I'm debating the merits of an intervention. So I think its affecting them in different ways.

In the last week Trump has... - Called a boycott on a company for supposedly being anti-Christmas - Put forward a plan to create a DEPORTATION FORCE to round up 11 million illegals and deport them. - Called for nationalizing a piece of the Keystone pipeline. - Said wages are too high - Claimed Putin is doing a great job in Syria. - Likened Ben Carson, a political opponent, to a pedophile. And after all that he's only the second craziest candidate running. He's done, it's over, Trump is done. EDIT: Cantorsdust posted:Pretty sure I've posted this before, but fascism transcends traditional left/right boundaries. I'm actually surprised it took this long for Third-Position politics to rise in America. The Tea-Party was the vanguard, now the Trumpabteilung are taking over. I don't want them running a dogcatchers office, much less having even a little chance of being the drat president.
