birdy the mighty decode season 1 is alright, but it's really worth watching for season 2, which is imo one of the loving coolest character driven sci-fi stories ever. and bubblegum crisis is really awesome, too

you could also watch dirty pair, which is about a pair of space cops fighting crime in space and on alien planets.

i really love space dandy but i can understand why you'd drop it if you're looking for a space adventure thing, since it's really more of a showcase for a huge mishmash of directors making their own individual stories featuring the same cast of characters

Birdy the Mighty Decode was a real surprise for me as to how drat good a sci-fi show it was. It even doesn't pull punches when the REAL bad poo poo starts going down. I've still gotta watch the second season too, so now I'm really looking forward to it.

Though I'll never forgive it for killing the best character four episodes in. Goodnight, you magnificent gay blue robot :ohdear:.

I'd like to ask for some suggestions for sci-fi watching material, please.
To be a little bit more specific, what I'm looking for I guess is old-fashioned adventures but in space. People being heroes, trying to stop problems, bad guys being bad, etc. I'm not against political intrigue or cosmic horror or humans are the real monstersssssss, but I'd like to keep things focused on ADVENTURE :black101:
EDIT: Space Opera. That's the term. Oops. :v:

I just recently finished Outlaw Star and I loved the hell out of it, currently going through Cowboy Bebop and Space Pirate Captain Harlock and they're pretty fun as well. Tried Space Dandy, wasn't really 100% on it and dropped it at about episode 10. People keep suggesting Bubblegum Crisis.

Galactic Cyclone Braiger, it's a mecha anime but the robot isn't as important as the space shenanigans J9 gets up to. It has a fun cast of characters, a great soundtrack, and lots of space adventure! I'm only partway through it myself but I've enjoyed it so far.

Well, thanks to this thread, I've watched Space Battleship Yamato 2199.

I love it! The characters animation seems quite static in places, and I have a totally unreasonable hatred for all the Iscander characters, but oh boy, that sure is a show about a real fuckin awesome battleship fighting space nazis. I love the space battles. The ships are awesome, the technobabble is fun, the strategies are great, and I love the old school laser sounds. Got the biggest possible :haw: grin during episode 25.

"They cannot possibly shoot at us! Beam weapons don't work in here!"
"OH poo poo THEY'RE FIRING ACTUAL ARTILLERY SHELLS"

I also appreciate that it's not just dumb evil nazis on the antagonist's side, there's all sorts, including downright decent dudes watching out for their men, handsome rogues with a SPACE SUBMARINE, rebels - and still cartoonishly evil nazis, because those guys make great villains.
Also butts. So many butts. Including one instance of incredibly blatant robot butt. Bless you, Space Battleship Yamato 2199.

What other shows are there with incredible displays of badass men/women staring each other down and pulling off amazing strategies? Doesn't have to be space, doesn't have to be sea, doesn't matter. I want a badass crew on a badass vessel.

Did you watch the Yamato movie? Odyssey of the Celestial Ark

The movie introduces the guys who are going to be the antagonists in Yamato 2202.

I got around to watching Kyousougiga after it got recommended so much.

It was pretty good but I'm not really sure it really warranted all of the praise, like "this totally should have been the AOTY the year it came out" praise. Like I've already forgotten most of the details, kind of in one ear and out the other sort of experience.

Kyousougiga is largely an emotional thing for me, I'm able to forgive all of the flaws it has because it's a story that consistently hits me really hard. If it didn't click with you, well, then, I guess that's that. Nothing left to say.

Okita is the best, isn't he? 2014's movie (make sure to watch it as others suggested, it owns) did a lot to sell me on Kodai as the captain and I can't wait for the sequel, but I'll miss the old man.

Space Battlestar Battleship Yamato is a real fun movie and well worth a watch :allears:. The ending gets pretty dumb - we only have minutes to evacuate, let's waste them on long goodbyes!, but it's still a good adaptation for a feature film. My favourite bit is the guy getting all excited about being assigned to the Third Bridge. It brought back memoried of the first new Star Trek film where the away team was Kirk, Sulu.... and random redshirt :allears:.

I liked what I saw of the anime Neoranga. Basically three sisters inherit their very own kaiju and what I saw at least was about how their community reacts to this and how they use it to try and fix their lives and their community. I never finished it though.

quote:

On the planet of Hekiou, there is a continuing war between the first wave of immigrants and the second. An important section of the military uses a native creature, the Niebass, to give its soldiers translocation abilities. These soldiers are all women, with the alien creature transplanted into their wombs. Some people see this practice as a violation of human women by aliens, and Mana Oga's boyfriend has a similar perspective on the matter. Mana Oga is a new soldier in this section, and the story follows her and the other women in her group who accept the alien creatures into their wombs in order to defend their homes.

The angels had somewhat weak personalities, I hope that Godzilla Isn't made as secondary as the Angels became later on. Honestly I started liking all the characters at least a little but in the end I just wanted them all to die, maybe they did, the ending wasn't too clear. Mostly I just wanted more fights as they communicated far more in far less time than any of the other scenes.
