I agree they would have been happy to let him keep going if it was working: it wasn't, they were forced into several embarrassing backdowns and long-grass-kicking exercises recently. Weaponised incompetence has been the hallmark of this government.

The Labour NEC, and you can replace them by voting for the CLGA slate for NEC (you should have got an email if you're a party member) - that's Black, Shawcroft, Webbe, Williams, Willsman, Wolfson. Other ways you can influence the composition of NEC are by voting for Corbyn, and by getting involved in union politics (unions have delegates on the NEC).

Doesn't the wording of the suspension mean that AGMs and their associated motions should be pushed to the end of the suspension period rather than simply being overridden entirely? So even if conference delegates are appointed by fiat it ought to be only an interim measure until a proper vote can be held?

The Tories have come through the last three months somehow looking like the sensible, calm, orderly party that has a plan and knows exactly what it is doing, it is mind-boggling how they've managed to organise themselves so so so much better than Labour. Do you remember in the tail end of Hague/Howard/IDS era when the Tories looked useless to swing voters and Labour strolled it? We're definitely on the other side of that fence now.

There's a big difference between being able to recite and recall things well and actually understanding why you are doing those things, and how they work. I suspect it's in part because there are a lot of Chinese people here and so it's easy for them to socialise mainly within a culturally familiar group that speaks their language, in the manner of expats everywhere. But I've also worked with some really good Chinese mathematicians and scientists, and there is some excellent scientific literature coming out of the country (although I think the quality is pretty variable). Also I attended a talk from a visiting Chinese scientist who introduced us to the mathematical concept of a hypersausage. He really looked confused as to why his audience all seemed to be trying not to crack up whenever he mentioned it. Then halfway through the talk he mentioned a related construct, the supersausage...

The most interesting part of the new YouGov poll is that for all the guff about UKIP gunning for Northern seats, they're within the margin of error of being pushed into fourth. The Tories being second in Scotland even considering the MoE is interesting too.

LemonDrizzle posted:https://twitter.com/MattSingh_/status/755752584904839168 Not quite. Lib Dems are only up 1% from GE result and actually have the most fragile vote (56% retention vs 76% Lab and 90% Con) which is amazing considering they hit 8% at the GE. It's not surprising Con retention is sky high when you consider the May takeover Thatcher mega nostalgia effect. It's clear Labour are still hurting from UKIP and are getting less of those voters back than the Tories. The real question is whether or not politics is unpredictable enough that the weightings are invalid (we already saw low socioeconomic status and youth vote underestimated in EURef)? Labour leads 47-21 amongst 18-24s and 36-29 amongst 25-49s. If brexity poor people are going to be less prone to turnout but the younger more remain/Labour leaning demographic turns out in protest at brexit/Tories then there could be a surprise in store. Also if all the 65+ mega Tories die of old age.
